Hey everyone

I was across the border recently and i got my hands on a Sig 229 at a local range. First time with the gun and i felt that it shot great. I'm a big fan of the p226 as i own one in 9mm. What are some of your thoughts of the gun; and how do you feel it stacks up to the p226.

Since I was in the states it had the normal barrel not extended. How do you good people feel about the extended barrel here? I personally hate how it looks aesthetically, but that's coming from someone who knows very little, so more importantly...what do you think?

So in short, how does it compare to the p226 shooting wise?

Here are some quick pics I took at the range.

here is the 229

and i also picked up a elite ITW nylon holster for a great price.

IMO there isn't that much difference acuracy wise. The P229 has a 106mm barrel up here, and the 226 112mm.

I don't own a 229, but from what I remember when I handled it, the grip felt fatter. Not sure if it's right or not, just a feeling I had.

I went for the 226 since it's a full size model and it would be used only at the range. They're both fine pieces, can't go wrong either way.

The 229 is a great pistol, choosing between the 226 and 229 basically comes down to fit. Both are great platforms. I prefer the 228 as it has a lighter slide and handles differently, but they are hard to find.

Like others have said, the feel's a bit different, P229 grips are a bit fatter. I'm not a big fan of extended barrels either but, honestly, it doesn't look too bad on the P229.

That said it's hard for me to compare my P229 with my other Sigs 'cause it's an SAS model (dehorned, hammerless, DA-only DAK trigger) and is therefore a totally different beast.

Here's a (bad) picture of my P229, before I got new, slimmer (and slicker, IMO) black aluminium grips for it. Not only does it look better with aluminium grips, it's also a lot easier to hold on to than the wood grips.

I find the P229 very similar to the P226. The grips are the same thickness, only the P229 is slightly shorter. Also, shooting them, they are very similar. I like them both. I ended up selling my P229 recently though because I prefer my P226ST's more due to the added heft.

I kind of want a P229 Elite Stainless. I have a couple P226's and I love them. I have handled a couple of the 229's and they seem to fit the hand nice and be nicely balance, even with the CDN barrel.

I have both 226's and 229's and they are all accurate. I find I prefer the 229 as it just seems to fit my hand better. I don't believe that the grips are any "fatter" on the 229 although they may seem so as they are shorter. The frame dimensions are the same though as 226 mags will work in the 229 but of course will stick out a bit as they are longer.
I thought the barrel sticking out a bit would bother me but it really doesen't and is a small price to pay for such a great pistol.

P226 mags may work in a P229, however the reverse, as in many things in life, is not true. P229 mags do not work in a P226, they are too fat.

Actually the 229 mags fit just fine. I just tried a 9mm 229 mag in my 9mm 226 and it fit in fine but wouldn't engage as it's too short.

i loved the way the sig p229 classic 22 felt, so im going to get that and the 9mm xchange kit.

for 1100$ i get .22 and 9mm in a freaking SIG!!

The grip width on both the 229 and 226 are the same, the 229 grip is only shorter in heigth.

If you have small hands get the P226 and install a Sigarms short trigger "229 is only really good for CTC, which you cant do in Canada ;)"

In my view, the SIG 229 is one of the best pistols on the market. I have owned three of them and they were all fantastic. I keep only one, because I also have the 228 and the 239.

Once you get used to the bore axis and the trigger reset, I don't believe there are any real drawbacks with this design. Even the double action trigger is easy to shoot if you stage it.

When my girlfriend and I are shooting clays at 25, 50 and 75 yards with pistols... apparantly I am not allowed to use the SIG 229 now, as that is "cheating". This sounds crazy, but the one I have, it has an almosst "magical" ability to get rounds on target. It has to be one of the most forgiving and shootable guns I have shot. I can hit clays at 25 yards with other pistols, but beyond that range I only even attempt it with a select few guns, and the 229 is one of them. It rocks!

These are pictures of a brand new one:

229 looks like a dwarf gun to me - i prefer the 228 with the full-height slide for looks. the new 229 e2 looks good but im not sure if the grips are good for people with big hands
