i grew up and my father and uncles all had 308's.270's and a couple 375 H&H guns in the familly aswell 1 300 savage 2 303's and a 30-06, but the first 3 mentiond were always the favorites, when i got older i chose to go my own way and venture from tradition so i bought a 7mm mag and a cz manlicher in 30-06 but it never felt the same as growing up and the confidence i had shooting deer and ocasional other big game animals with 308,and 270.My first hunting rifle was a winchester in 308 and it seem'd flawless every thing i pointed it at died:D i gave it to my younger cousine back home in sask and he loves it, now i have come full circle and have now sold my 30-06 and 7mm mag not that there was anything wrong with those calibers it just seemed differn't.And I never felt at ease hunting with them. so now i have orderd a t3 in 308 and a cz manlicher in 308 and the hopes of a winchester model 70 in 270 and 375 H&H in the near future, aswell will soon have in my locker a k98 308 and my k-31 shoots 308 ball out of the 7.5 swiss case,

so out of interest and for the sake of discussion what are your favorite hunting rifle cartridges?:sniper: mine are and i think always will be 308,270,375 H&H

I love the 308 winchester, truly a versatile cartridge. It can hunt medium game with ease, and when needed it can step up to larger game like big blackies and moose. It will also go down to varmints and predators, and is arguably one of the greatest target cartridges available.

The 308 case is also a parent to many other favourites, but most notably for me is the 243 winchester. I have had several in the past several years and they all could shoot lights out at incredible distances. It will kill deer, as I have witnessed, but I believe it's true calling comes in the form of killing coyotes and wolves. And it will hold it's own on the bench too.

I am also very fond of the 222 remington. Had one in a M70 a few years back, and like a fool I sold it. Now I have one on loan from Doug (Thanks buddy!). I have yet to shoot it, but I already know it will impress.

I am also in love with the 358 winchester (yeah I know, another 308 case! Don't ya love it!!) Maybe it is the fact that it is most commonly chambered in great handling levers, but who cares, it is an awesome cartridge too. It will kill anything on the North American continent, some will argue it is too small for grizz, and they may be right, but given the choice of a 358 or nothing in the face of a charging griz, I think most guys would respond the same!

I also have very high regard for both the 6.5X55 swede and the 7X57 mauser. These two are beyond compare in my opinion. I have owned and loaded for both, and they are a lot of fun!

I hope I didn't bore you guys too much with my long winded writing!

Damn! Choosing 3 is a tough one when you own a considerably larger variety.
I guess the 22 LR rimfire gets the small slot, the 7x57 the medium, and the 308 Norma Mag the heavier end. But I also really like the 222, the 220 Swift, the 6mm, the 6.5x55, the 270, the 7mm Mag, the 300 Savage, the 30-06, the 8x57, the 338 Win, the 375 H&H, etc, etc, etc. :runaway:  Regards, Eagleye

Not counting my Marlin 39A Mountie 22LR, I'll take (in fact I do use)

1. 257 Bob. Coyotes, wolves, deer, etc. Mine is the AI but I'd be as happy with the standard Roberts.
2. A medium-large 7mm. Mine is the 280AI, with a good bullet for all-around anything.
3. My 358 Norma with 225 TSX's at 2950fps for when the 280 doesn't feel large enough.

They're all good. Except the 30-06.

Particularly, though, for big game, I'd say the 7mm08, the 338WM and a 375 of some description (currently a 378).

Then, for smaller stuff, the 22 hornet, the 204, and the 22lr, of course.

For target/paper work, the 223, the 260 and the 6ppc
