I was just browsing in the Hunting and Sporting Arms EE ads and got to thinking, what kind of dope do some of these guys think were on?

There are some really nice guns in there but because they are wearing a cheap ass Tasco or Bushnell scope and a pair of $5 Weaver mounts that the price of the gun should go up another $200. Heck I wouldn't even raise the going rate on the price and would probably take the $25 scope off it because I'd be embarassed to let you guys know I actually had one on it. They can go buy a $700 rifle but can't spit out the dough for a good scope for it?

Now don't get me wrong, I've got a cheap Bushnell on one of my shooter 99's cause it's never failed me so why pack it up but if I was to sell that gun I sure as hell wouldn't raise the going rate on a 99 at say $500 to $700 because it's got $10 O/U mounts and a $25 scope on it.

Of course most of these guys are newbies and think that they've either got a real diamond or that we're really stupid, most of the time you'll see these guns BTT a few times before they give up and drop their price although I have seen some vets here do the same.

Anyways, rant mode off, I really ain't upset, just wanted to hear some point of views on the EE sales, but lets keep this civil and not start any flames cause sometimes this can turn into a touchy topic.........and I'll lock it right away.;)

Buyer beware
There are some good deals on the EE.
But, yes I must agree if the item in question is over priced and the guy is on his umteenth BTT, well one would think common sense would kick in.
But obvously there is no common sense. and yes I've tried logic when hageling with them, and it rairly works.
It's kinda like arguing with an idiot. They bring you down to their level, and then kill you with experience.
BTW:
Lots of stuff at gunshows are priced the same way.

Why buy a new gun when you can buy a used one for 95% of the price, sometimes more.:D :D :D
Exactly... I wonder if these guys have ever heard of the blue book for gun values. If you don't have a book just go into any reputable gunstore have a look at the used-gun rack, low end scopes and rings are worth... nothing. Original iron sights are a selling feature... even high end scopes rarely carry more than half of their original value.

There are some very good deals on the EE forum and we all know who the good guys are.

Another pet peeve is that some guys are running two of the same ads in the same section about 3 days apart from each other so that they can get 2 btt's per week, unfortunately it works cause you can have 2 ads in the same section, just not two of the same ads in different sections, but of course they think they're pulling one over on us mods, makes me laugh.

Maddog , I agree with you on the two ads thing.Maybe the rules should be adjusted to make it so you can't run more than one ad for the same item , in the same section.

Picked up a blue book at the library yesterday. and yes ,lol, the asking prices are some times double the usd value in the book, :D And if there are issues with the firearms that value may even be less.
But their are a few very good values, enough to keep me looking :D :D :D

This is the main reason (and lack of time) why I don't bother to go to gun shows anymore. I pay my admission then spend the rest of the time shaking my head at the prices or junk that is offered. Maybe it's just me.

MadDog, thank you for voicing what many of us were probably thinking regarding the pricing in the EE. I still spend a lot of time looking at what is offered in the EE - but I think that is all part of my 'adiction problem' to this Gunnut 'thing'.:D

Dont worry, it is not just you...

It's the occasional bargain that keeps us coming back to EE and gunshows ( well wintertime there's not much else to do). Unfortunately you have to sift through a lot of junk and overpriced items!
One other peeve of mine is when someone lists an item, you send them a p.m., and they take days to get back to you. I just add them to my list of "don't even bother to try".

If the shop prices seem a bit high, and the gunshow prices seem a bit high, and the EE list prices seem a bit high............. perhaps it's actually your estimate of the value that is a bit low.:D

After all, something is worth exactly what someone will pay for it.

There's lots of silly stuff in the EE but certainly some gems if you check regularly.

My single biggest gripe is not enough information. I've seen ads selling a shotgun that didn't include basic info such as model, barrel length, vent rib or not, choke, chamber length, etc. I'm going to want to know ALL of that and more. Then guys get #####y when you ask them the basic questions.

Second biggest is "will email pictures if serious." Well how the hell do I know if I'm serious if I haven't seen the pictures? If I ask for pictures I'm seriously interested in seeing some pictures and that's it.

Third biggest is guys who want to haggle endlessly when THEY post a WTB item. I've had this happen a couple of times even though I asked a fair price. THEY want the item, I have one, and they still want to nickle and dime on price and shipping. If keeping that five bucks shipping is more important than the item you wanted then why the heck did you post a WTB in the first place?

Now this makes me happy to hear that the mods are aware of this.

The other BTT scam I've seen lots of here are the ones that post a for sale ad on the EE. Inside the 7 days they edit that ad and remove it with "please delete" in the header. They then immediately repost the same ad. Mods come along cleaning up the EE and delete the edited post [evidence gone] and they get a free BTT inside the seven days that the rules say an ad can be BTT'd.

Watch for it, it's funny [or not really, if you play by the rules]. ;)

I gotta say I agree 100%.

Been the recipient of some great deals on here by being the first in with the "I'll take it" PM. Some examples:

Ruger 77 7x57mm minty with rings $475 shipped.

Browning A-bolt Hunter .30-06 with bases/rings exc $425 shipped.

Rem 700 heavy barrel .308 Win with bases, exc. $550 shipped.

Postscript: Still have the Ruger. Prints 3/4" 3-shot groups with factory ammo. Haven't worked up a load for it yet. Rem 700 .308 HB prints 1/2" 3-shot groups with cheap IVI 150 gr soft point. And I sold the Browning .30-06 locally at a gunshow for $750 with a Tasco 3-9 scope I added to it. Fellow that bought it has whacked a moose every year with it since he got it off me....

Agreed!! And the other sad fact is that alot of these folks have ZERO posts, which means they just come here to USE CGN to sell stuff and for no other reason....

.

There are still some decent deals to be had in the EE sections, and there are some great guys out there in our groups, as well.

Although I'm not to sure about Madd Dog and his penchant for 1899's!:runaway:

Yeah, especially when you can see that they are on-line here when you PM them. Had one recently where I made a very serious offer on an item freshly posted on the EE. By serious offer I mean very close to what the seller was asking. I could see he was "on-line" as his green light was on the whole time, so I know he had read the PM. But he ignored me for over 2 hours.

Finally, I sent him another PM requesting a response as if he wasn't interested in selling I was going to move on with offers on other items by other posters. I finally get a response, then try & negotiate with him to finalize the deal. I wasn't at all happy with his responses & was left with an uncomfortable feeling about that poster despite his positive trader rating. I ended up passing on the item as I was left with no confidence in the potential deal. I've pretty much decided that I won't ever buy from or sell to that person.

Anyway, it ended up being a bonus for me as another party put up the same model item on the EE just after. It was a much better "deal" as it included some nice accessories. So, for $30 more I am netting about $300+ value and dealing with a much better 'communicator'. The other person's item is still forsale on the EE. And I bet he drops the price when he BTT's. :p
