What amazes me are EE posts which just have a word or item in the subject, giving no indication of what is for sale or even if it's a WTS or WTB add. I make a point of never reading them.

The other is selling a group of guns as a collection when they have no relationship or theme to each other yet will not sell individually.

You see it more at gunshows.... the guy that won't deal on an item on his table. Gotta get every penny out of it. Then you see him out in the parking lot puffing away because he has a $350 a month cigarette habit and you also hear that he drops $1,000 a month at the casino...

Some of the prices I've seen asked for very ordinary guns have made me laugh, particularly chopped, channeled, drilled, tapped, varnished and carved surplus rifles realistically worth about $75.00 to $125.

Some pretty plain old sporting guns are a little "optimistically" priced too.

I know, you price things a little high and negotiate down, but to ask twice or more than what something is worth is an unrealistic expectation.

Reminds me of the time my friend up the coast, who worked for Lever Arms in the 1960s and 1970s was asked to appraise some guns for a local fisherman.
The guy brought in some guns that had spent most of their lives in the foc'sle of a tiny gillnetter, and some time in the bottom of a leaky skiff.

You can imagine, they were dented, banged, scratched, and above all, rusty. your usual collection of an old Model 94, a single shot shotgun, a rusty cut down Enfield and a .22 of some description. He told they guy they weren't worth anything unusual, that they were just utility grade shooters due to their condition.

"What do you mean," he replied, insulted. "Those are antiques. They belonged to my grandfather."

But, as nairbg said.

"After all, something is worth exactly what someone will pay for it."

info

i'm roughly new and inexperienced when it comes to firearms, but plain and simple i think alot of people are just trying to make a buck $$ off an inexperience hunter/sportsman like myself. And it should be noted. I come here to learn from this site and it helps, people are also aware of this when selling an item. I've bought and sold one gun here, and very pleased how it went. The obvious, is that guns drop in price when originally was purchased, i didn't include the taxxes, and the gas that it took me to purchase the gun or the lunch i had during the transactionLOL. If a Blr308 is 750.00 new, then used it would be 650.00 used in excellent condition, ans so on,but how many guns are in excellent condition?thanks.

It's gotten to the point where I cringe whenever a friend or co-worker, who isn't a serious shooter but may own a gun of some type, asks what it's worth or if I'm interested in buying it. It's usually something that once belonged to a father, or the guy got it as a kid, or something similar. These people all "know" that their 10/22 is worth $750 'cause they saw one almost like it going for that on E-Bay or at a show. My next comment to them always results in a sulk or a pout (theirs).

As far as the cheapo scopes on good guns, admit it. Don't you usually slap on a Tasco or bottom-of-the-line Bushnell on an otherwise good gun when you go to sell it? I know it's futile and almost insulting, but I also know that I do it every time. Gotta do something with all those useless POS scopes left over from days of wine and stupidiy.

One other peeve of mine is when someone lists an item, you send them a p.m., and they take days to get back to you. I just add them to my list of "don't even bother to try".

Agreed. Then there are some individuals who waste your time by pm'ing you with requests for pictures and 'discussing' pricing only to turn around and say they don't want to buy your item. I guess they have too much time on their hands. They get added to my "list" and I spend my time dealing with the decent people on this board.

Second biggest is "will email pictures if serious." Well how the hell do I know if I'm serious if I haven't seen the pictures? If I ask for pictures I'm seriously interested in seeing some pictures and that's it.

Pics are a big deal that will usually seal the deal when selling a gun, I even take a couple of the bore with the macro setting and my bore light so the buyer knows exactly what he's getting, it makes a big difference to alot of guys that don't want a shot out barrel.

Mind you there are a few guys here that don't wanna go through the hassle of uploading their pics and then posting them in their ads so they just tell you they'll email you them which is fine as long as they do.

Smitt, no wonder you had a good transaction on your only buy, look who you bought it from, and you even had lunch with that gun pirate????;) :D

I know it's my fault, but I often surf the exchange forum and see the key words, get excited and read the post, only to afterwards realize it's a WTB ad. Maybe there should be a WTB thread.

Folks can ask what they want for stuff, maybe they'll find some poor fool who doesn't know where to check prices. Most of us know what a new rifle is worth if we shop around.

I don't think it's hard for someone to put "WTB" in the title of their post, just ignorant if they don't.

Just thought of something else, ever notice that some people are looking at Gunbroker . com to get a idea of what their guns are worth?

BIG PROBLEM!!!!

The U.S. pricing on the same guns we've got up here are like night and day. I just finished selling about 4 old Savage 1899's that would go for over $550 on those friggan sites but I know better than that here and priced them from $200-$350 cause I know damn well that they won't sell for U.S. prices here, at least I know I won't pay the U.S. prices for one, even if it's a really nice condition 99 they can still shove it up their arse before I'll pay u.s. rates. You want U.S. prices go for a ride to the U.S. and get them.:p

I agree with MadDog on the pricing of guns with low end scopes, then i take into account that and offer a fair price stating the scope is worth nothing and the seller either will not get back to you or is pissed and thinks you low-balling him, when in fact your not. Ca'nt win somtimes and i hope it happens to these guys alot so they get the hint. I think that if an item geta BBT more than 4-5 times it should come off EE for 4 weeks unless there has been a price change in that time, if an item up for that long it stops getting veiwed. MO.

Hahahaha, that reminds me, did anyone here btt their item the day after we came back online after the software upgrade?

Cripes man, I wasn't thinking when I did it cause everyone and their dog did the same thing and my btt was off the first page in less than an hour!

If a person cant post the pics of thier for sale items I will not ask for them to be sent to me anymore. It seems as soon as you ask for pictures lots of sellers seem to think that you will be taking the item.

Statements like "Dont ask for pics unless you are a serious buyer because I dont want to be sending pics all day" are just one of the reasons I wont ask anymore. I generaly like to see what I am looking at before I can make a decision, some people dont seem to understand this.

Thats why pics like this make a big difference!;) :D

It's not hard to include a picture so there is very little reason for the "ask for picture emailed". If you don't post a picture I move on.

Joe, don't you ever clean your rifles. :D :D :D
You guys are very correct on the pricing, I have watched and drooled from afar, and do not understand how someone can justify asking the same prices I would down here. Waiting for the day my wife gets pizzed off at me so I can move to the NWT. Then maybe I can get some good deals. Pics are great so you have a clue on what you are getting into. The guys that are seriuos on selling fast usually have some good pics up or will email them at a moments notice. Les

You can 'negotiate' the price.:p  I've bought three guns on the EE and have paid what the buyer was asking. If I don't think the gun is priced fairly, I won't waste my time chasing it. I answerred a few WTB ads and priced what I had fairly. Thankfully, no one has insulted me by putting in a counter offer on the price I was asking. Sadly, I prefer to sell my guns at a gunstore on consignment even though I can get a few bucks more by selling here and saving the 20% consignment fee. I have a low tolerance for BS and tire kicking, so it's probably better I do what I do........

If the shop prices seem a bit high, and the gunshow prices seem a bit high, and the EE list prices seem a bit high............. perhaps it's actually your estimate of the value that is a bit low.:D

After all, something is worth exactly what someone will pay for it.
That is the truth, anyone checked the price of oil lately?

When time permits I will look at revisin the EE Forum rules to reflect some of the problems that are popping up.

To those who see a person is "online" and fells that their PM was ignored, just because the green button says their on CGN, that doesn't meanthat they are in front of the computer.

CGN is set to be my home page so when I go onto the Net it is the first thing that opens.I usually leave my computer on CGN and can be away from the computer for up to a few hours.

This is where the recipt function for PMs comes in handy. You get a confirmation sent to you that your PM was opened.

IMHO, something being sold is basically worth half of the current retail price, then price adjusted for condition, availability, collectability, etc.

SKBY.
