My worst hunting trip happened when I was 15. We went up north to my older brother's for Thanksgiving or some kind of family get-together. I was ecstatic as moose season was open, I had a tag and my brother had been seeing several cows & bulls at work every day
This was going to be my first true moose hunt as a shooter with my very own rifle & tag! I carefully packed all my stuff along with my new, scoped .30-06 and I could barely contain myself during the trip to his place. We were finally on the way
After arriving and stowing my gear in the guest room, I was showing my brother my new rifle when I discovered that I'd forgotten my hunting license & tags back home
We still went hunting that weekend but I wasn't allowed to bring my shiny new rifle
I was treated like the rest of the younger kids instead of the newest big game hunter
And as it turned out, that was my last opportunity for a moose hunt that fall and the season slowly slipped away
Thirty years have passed since that long ago trip and I've never forgotten my licenses since. I can thank my father for being strict enough for me to learn a lesson that I've never forgotten.
