You're Not Gonna Believe This..........

I feel your pain. I'm moving to Quebec this summer and I have to attend 2 courses to hunt there even though I'm a CORE instructor-tester in BC.

Well it's all done and I have my first B.C. hunting license...........and 2 black bear tags. Now I'm gonna go kill me some B.C. blackies !!!!

CONGRATS!!
good to see it all worked out in the end ;)
and ya, I figure it's about that time I should get off my azz and find me a spring blackie as well.

Get that .350 RM dusted off Douglas... good luck.

Actually Hoyt I'm headed for the Yukon but there is the road to Skagway, the Atlin road and the Haines road that all have large sections of B.C. and gobs of blackies...........who knows I may arrow another this year, but that 350 sure does work well............

My .358 M77 Frontier is getting out this year, with 225 Partitions... don't have to shoot much over 150-200 and more likely 50-75... should be perfect.

I'm trying to figure out why they have different rules for different people. When I moved to BC from Ontario, I simply waited for 6 months and then walked in to the local Service BC with my Ontario hunting licence (not my proof of Ontario hunting course) and 6 months worth of hydro and telephone bills with my address on them. 10 minutes later I walked out with my BC hunter number card.

I am perplexed as to why they make other people jump through hoops.

Either way, I'm glad that it worked out for you, Douglas. Go get 'em.

You were lucky in that you dealt with a clerk at Service BC who was not aware of the laws involved in what you were asking to have done.
You brought in good evidence to show that you were a resident of BC and had been for the required six months period. It looked good to the employee at Service BC, so he/she gave you the hunter number.

It states right on the application form what will be accepted as proof of residency: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlife/hunting/docs/hunter_number_application.pdf

Or if your documentation doesn’t accurately reflect how long you have lived in British Columbia, you can include one of the above plus seven months of BC Hydro bills, ICBC Insurance papers, or rental agreement.

The part that surprised me is that the application mentions (for the hunting course requirement):

"...or other documentation evidencing successful completion of a hunter safety training course issued by a province or territory of Canada, or a state of the United States of America"

Apparently it is up to the clerk to decide what documentation is suitable "evidence". In my case, my Ontario hunting licence card was deemed suitable. This makes sense to me, because it is impossible to obtain an Ontario hunting licence without having passed the mandatory hunting course (except for the "grandfathered" individuals who had licences before the course was required).

In other cases, I guess the clerks refuse to accept a licence, and demand to see the actual certificate of course completion.

In my mind, things like this shouldn't be left up to however the clerk is feeling that day. In my case, I am glad it worked out, but on the flip side it is unfair to others to make them jump through hoops.

In other words, it's bullsh!t.

strangely enough , my experiences mirror ironsighter's.
I've had a couple or more friends in the not so distant past who's quest to get a BC hunter number went the same way with zero hoops to jump thru. 2 from Ontario and 1 from Manitoba.

I'm thinking at some point in the last couple years someone musta lobbied the govt to change the rules.
