Youth build in 250 savage

If I'm not mistaken Cooper offers a model in 250 savage. With the price of a gun a new barrel and gunsmithing it might not be much more to get a nice rifle that will have value if you were to upgrade

That's a real interesting idea. The only thing I don't like about the Cooper is their obese stock design. Those things need to be put on a diet. If Cooper ever hires a decent stock designer they'll have a damned fine product on their hands.

Ok, I WANT a 250-3000 (250 Savage) in a bolt action youth sized rifle for my boy, and yes, for me to play with load development and testing. You do make sense SC, as does anyone when they recommend a 30-06 for all NA hunting. However I find that very boring.

Would like blued steel and wood as well. Lol

If I was to stick to pure logical choices I would only own maybe 3 rifles and call it a day. Thankfully I don't have to, and hopefully neither will my son!!

I have the same feelings as you. My boy is still too young to be shooting, but looking into the future, there is a few of kids in our group of friends that I'm thinking of building a rifle for. I'm dead set on the 250 savage also. I never did think that the ruger may be a decent way to go... And with rebarreling you could add some length to the barrel so its not quite so much blast and noise. Do any of you have the ruger american compact? How does it fit kids? Is there much recoil or noise difference with the 250 vs the 243?

For some reason I'd take a 25 cal or 30 cal over a 24, 27 or 28 cal.

Could have been the rifles, but every 250 I shot had much less recoil than the 243. I have only fired about 6-7 243's though. Don't think I have ever shot a lighter bullet than 80 grain in the 243, and 90 or 95 in the 250.

The 250 has much less case capacity than the 243 as well, it's an efficient little case!! Brass is easy to find as well, more so than the 243 around here as 22-250 brass is everywhere.

If you like beautiful blueing and walnut, I don't know why you are still looking past the ruger ultralight

Bill, enough of the dancing around. :)

1) Buy a walnut and blued-steel Model 96 Husqvarna in 9.3X57 from Tradex for less than $300.

2) Send it to any 'smith with very good reputation.

3) Have him fit and chamber a plain vanilla budget barrel to the action. It will shoot just fine for a hunting rifle.

4) List the excellent condition take-off 9.3 barrel on the Equipment Exchange for $100, and watch it fly away.

5) Refinish the stock with the young one for some quality time together.

6) PM sent

Ted

or a 6.5 x 55 and load it light for him.

Planning another rifle but this time for the youngster. He has started using my 222 this year and loves it. Would like to move him up to a more suitable deer cartridge.

If the Browning X-Bolt Micro Midas came in 250 savage I think my search would be over. One option is to buy the 22-250 version and have it rebarreled, but that seems like a waste.

I think the 250 would be a great intermediate step before the 7mm-08 and would like a nice youth sized bolt action with an appropriate sized action.

Any suggestions? Maybe a mini Mauser action to base a custom? Is there a factory rifle that doesn't break the bank that would fill the need?

I haven't read through the whole thread but thought about this for quite some time before I just settled on a .243 Win. Not nearly as cool, but still effective. Now, onto your question - the mini-mauser as in the Zastava built ones that Remington also sold do not, imo have a long enough magazine box. IIRC the magazine box is about 0.2" shorter than SAMMI max OAL for the .250 Savage. I'd have to look back into my old research to give you an exact example. Remington did chamber the Model 7 MS in .250 Savage and can rarely be found for sale. Ruger also made the M77 in that chambering. A few years ago Savage did a run of the Model 11 in both SS and walnut/blued in .250 Savage. They are now discontinued but Savage will build you one on a special order.

Good luck - I love the .250 Savage!

Both are very mild. I have a load in my .243 that is a real pussycat and kills very well. I use an 85gr Partition with 33.0gr of IMR 4064. Recoil is incredibly mild. I've owned bot and I think felt recoil is pretty much a wash, all things being equal. On paper the .250 may be a bit less with one load or another, but in real life both are equally manageable.

Shame they don't make an 85gr-90gr Partition for the .250 as it would resurrect the older 1-14" twist guns.I know Barnes makes some light .25 X bullets.I shoot a Rem 700 Classic in .250 with a stiff dose of Win 760 and a 100gr Sierra.Kills deer just fine......Harold

you could buy a savage in 7mm08 , then buy a prefit barrel ( ie mystic precision ) in 250 savage and screw that into the action ..... then later on if you want , go back to the 7-08 barrel .

but browning does make some pretty rifles .....

I like Teds idea, end up with a Mauser, and a lot of it could be done by my son and I. Hmm

1899 is correct, the mini Mauser would be too short for the 250. Poo

I think I'll lay out the options and let my boy decide which route to take, 99% sure he will want to do as much as we can ourselves. He's an industrious little guy and loves anything we build or repair ourselves.
