Youth, cowboy action

SASS (Single Actyion Shooting Society) Handbook has the age based shooting group classified as Juniors. Within the Juniors grouping, (aged 16 yrs and under) you have Young Guns (aged 14-16) and Buckaroos and Buckerettes (aged 13 and under). When shooting in the Buckaroo/Buckerette category, they may use 22 caliber rifle and pistols with standard velocity ammunition. Shotguns in this category can be a .410. The rules go on to say that knockdowns are not required to fall for the Buckaroos/ettes. The handbook urges extra caution when having the young'ns on the course. For the Young Guns category, they are using the same calibers as the elders.

Hope this helps

The Lincoln county regulators meet the 4th saturday of the month in Eureka Montana. (One hour from Cranbrook). They are done with outside shooting this year and have moved inside for the wax bullet season. Rocky Mountain House Alberta might be worth a mention depending where in the East Kootenays you are located. There are four or five people at the Cranbrook gun club who are or would be interested in regular cowboy matches they just need some one to come up with some stages and a plan. Send me a pm if you are close to Cranbrook and I can give you some contact info

Thanks for the info Ronald T. Do you know of any clubs in the East Koots? I came from Courtenay on Vancouver island, Cowboy Action was pretty big up there. Here it doesen't seem to be.
How's your 97 Ronald T?
If you get East of the Rockies, the AFS holds monthly shoots from April to Nov. weather permitting at the Rocky Mountain House range. Also, the Canadian Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting is now held at this range on the Aug. long weekend. Further to that, this year, the Canadian SASS Regional will be held the following weekend after the Canadian Championship. Cowboy action shooting in our area is very strong,we ussually average around 50+ shooters for our one day mathces and around 130 for the Championship matches. Camping is available and info is readily available on the Alberta Frontier Shootist's website. If Rocky is too far north, there are matches held in Medicine Hat, warm but windy. If you are on the West side of the Rockies, one match you should not miss is Palmers Gulch @ Heffly Creek, just 14 min. north of Kamloops on the Sun Peaks Hwy. (Begining of July) If you want to "Go West Young Man", Mission holds an excellent match. It really doesn't matter where you go, You will have fun.

Does the rocky mountain house range hold workshops? Me and my son have both been building up our collections with the intention of competing but neither of us have competed. It would be nice to build up the confidence before jumping in. Also does anyone know where to get belts and holsters? I found a few choices for adults but the smaller ones for the 22's I am having no luck with.

Formal workshops for Cowboy Action shooting are few and far between, mainly for the simple reason, everyone will be willing to help you out in any way possible. SASS offers their booklet with all of the Safety rules and regulations regarding competing in a match. Might help you get started on what's required and as always "Safety First". CAS is a very different discipline in that all competitors in the "Posse" participate by helping out. Scoring, picking brass, unloading table safety checks, loading table safety checks, timer operation and score keeping, resetting targets(knock downs). Our Posse's usually run around 14 competitors and I always find there's more than enough for everyone to do. By the time the match is over, you WILL be part of the team!! and probably enjoy every minute of it. If you and your son by chance make it to one of our shoots, email me and I would be more than happy to make you feel comfortable and most of all Safe in the way we shoot. Some of us are authorized to give the SASS RO 1 Range Safety operation course. If you can find one in your area, take the course, it's worth every minute you spend. Caribou Lefty out of Kamloops does an excellent course, and as usual, there's always extra info (tips) on what works and what doesn't. Experience really does help in this case. Springs coming fast, I'm glad to see you're checking things out early. All The Best and Enjoy.
