My son has recently decided that he would like to join his dad hunting. He is to small to shoot my rifle and I have been looking for a good youth rifle in either 7mm-08 , or .243 for him. I have found several nice right handed models from Ruger , Remington etc.. but can't seem to find a left handed model. Does anyone make them? Also, would it be a good idea to teach him to shoot with a right handed model even if he is left eye dominant?

Remington offers the M700 SPS Youth in 708 and 243 for 2009...

No. Lots of downside and no up side, other than the fact that RH rifles are more plentiful. There are more choices than ever in LH rifles these days too.

McAdams in New Brunswick has a unfired used Browning A-bolt in .243 that they are asking $649.99. I was going to purchase...but my better-half said I needed to STOP buying for the time being.

I went throught the same thing earlier in the year looking for a smaller left handed bolt action rifle for myself. There is the Remmington Youth SPS which had been listed As well as the Browning A Bolt Micro Hunter. I went with the Browning for just $50 more, and it is a really nice gun. If you can wait till next year Broxning is releasing the x bolt micro hunter in left handed. As well Tikka is releaseing the T3 micro hunter in left handed in the summer of next year in Canada. I'm getting this one when it is released. At the present time IMHO I think the Browning A bolt micor hunter is your best value for your money. I just picked one up from Ellwood Epps for $744. in 7mm 08. Good luck on your search.

I am also right handed, left eye dominant.I started out in 1983 with a Remington 700 BDL LH,due to a wrist injury a couple years ago I had to look for a lighter more compact gun.I prefer the wood over synthetic so I went with a Browning Micro Hunter 7mm-08 LH.Awesome little rifle. My wife who is left handed shoots a right handed Remington model 7 7mm-08.She has adapted to the RH bolt and prefers it over both my LH rifles.
If you son is planning on shooting anything larger than deer in the future go with the 7mm-08.If he is of small stature start him with the Remington managed recoil cartriges.
your best bets for a LH 7mm-08 right now is Remington and Browning.Good Luck and happy hunting.

Ruger M77 Hawkeye

Ruger is offering LH short actions now also. They are nice compact little rifles also. 708 is the first chambering to be released, from what I've heard. With 204, 223, 22-250, 243 and 308 to follow.

I also have an A-bolt micro hunter in LH, .243 win. It's fairly compact and I think it would be good for a youth, but it's also quite comfortable for me, at 6'2". It's light, comfortable to carry, nice to shoot, and has been very accurate with handloads. Not quite as accurate with factory loads (1.5" groups at 100 yards). Can't go wrong with the A-bolt. $700-$730 is fair, anything lower is a good deal. Can't comment on the others.
