Hi there
starting to reload and would like to develope a load for my son's 308.
A reduced load with a hunting bullet for island deer,shots will be under 75 yards,
Some lighter bullets i have are 110gr ttsx, 125gr nosler ballistic tip, and
130gr ttsx. Was wondering are there any concerns for proper bullet expansion at reduced speed, at what point should i be concerned if any.
Powder on hand is IMR4895, aware of 60% of max load rule
any advice appreciated on bullet selection and load developement, not limited to supplies at hand.

I would go with the 110 ttsx and work up a load with H4895 starting from the 60% max load as per the Hodgdon manual. It would probably be fine at 60% - the ttsx will expand at 1800 fps. Do you have a chrony?
 
IMR 4895 doesn't have a 60% rule, it's only H 4895 that does.

FOr Island deer, reduced loads-I'd use any bullet. I wouldn't bother with the TSX bullets, as much as I love them, they work best with velocity. I'd get plastic tip bullet like Accubond, Ballistic Tip etc to ensure good expansion.

Be careful of subbing IMR 4895 for H4895 in 60% loads. Might work, might not. A pound of H4895 isn't too $$
 
I used the Sierra 125 for my boys when they started shooting 308. i think they were around age 6. Load was 38 gr of 4895 for around 2400 fps. Mild recoil. They shot iron sights off sand bags until they were around 12. This mild load would only work to 600 yards, but was very accurate, so long as wind was mild.
 
Have you thought about loading cast bullets at least for practice/plinking? Loads anywhere between 12-1300 to 2000fps can be worked up. Accuracy can be excellant. Recoil from very mild to moderate. Switch to a jacketed load for hunting. Lots of practice is important and shooting cast is the economical way to go.
