Hi all,

Both my 2 daughters who are 10 & 11 wants to start shooting  and I want to buy a rifle that would fit both left and/or right handed shooters, something in .22lr that is pleasent to shoot without been to $$$. If they both like it, I will need to buy another one :). I was thinking at a youth model one shot break action for simplicity or go for a semi but for that one, how do lefty handle a semi, any concerns? What would you recommend?

Thanks to all

Buy a cheap single shot bolt action rifle, it will be easier for them to load from a bench than a break action. They will actually get more shooting by loading single rounds then having to stop and load magazines with a semi. Chop the stock to fit them and add spacers as they grow.

Being left handed I just got rid of my semi in 22wrfm. Every time a shell ejected I would get a little powder burn on my right forearm if I was sleeveless. Also I could see the casings going past my face as they ejected. The were in front and no fear of hitting me, but it was unnerving. There are a couple of nice small 22 that are less than $300 new, the cricket (it comes in pink for girls) or the chipmunk. These little rifles will last a lifetime if looked after and most have a reasonable resale.

After considerable research, including helpful advice from other CGN's, and price comparisons, I purchased a Henry Mini Bolt from S.I.R.

It is a great little rifle - well designed, well made, looks good, fun to shoot, and amazingly accurate for its size and price. A nifty little rifle. The open fibre optic sights are probably the best sighting set-up for a beginner shooter.

Here is the interesting part (which applies to the right / left situation): I bought the rifle primarily for my grandson to use, but my wife, who shoots left handed, loves the rifle and can handle and shoot it so well that it is going to see a lot of range time in her hands. BTW, I also find it a joy to shoot. All in all a very nice little rifle - I highly recommend it.

Regarding the semi-auto and being a lefty question...I have no issues being a lefty and shooting my 10/22.

youth lefty/righty .22

i built one to train kids on that was a rossi pump.i brought the barrel down to 19 inches and bought an extra stock and cut it down.it was very good for my 9 year old son and 5 year old daughter.when they got older i put the original length stock back on.

If you need a gun in left or right handed....go to a lever .22....there are no bolt handles to deal with . I started my kids on a single bolt action and it was an old cooey. I chopped off the stock to fit and added spacers and recoil pads as they grew. Thus there was not a big outlay if they should lose interest and stop shooting...IMO.I hope that would never happen.
