youth small bore shooting programs

I am looking at starting a youth 22 program at our club however I am completey unfamiliar with what is out there to shoot for programs.

One of my end goals is to keep it to programs that are active in western Canada as I want to be able to have the kids travel to a match or two over the summer months.

Can anyone help or suggest to me what programs are active and fun to shoot.

Youth Programs

Might be worth finding out who is the Provincial Sporting Organization (PSO) for shooting sports. Or contact the National Sporting Organization (NSO) who happens to be the Shooting Federation of Canada (SFC). To establish what other programs are running in the province.

Try and find a local coach that has National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) credentials in the rifle shooting discipline.

EESA runs the SFC program.

Has for years.

Both of my kids went through it (I wish I had known as a kid).

We get 50 to 75 kids out each Friday night in the winter months.

Youth Programming

I too, have had a hard time finding info on programs along with athlete and coaching development. SFC was not much help. There dosen't seem to be much Canadian assistance available. If you find any please share it as there are a great number of clubs that would put the training and info to good use.

For coaches you will might start with the NCCP Program:-

For a club coach you will need to obtain the Level 1 and Level 2, plus the generic sport theory modules called Competition A + B. Then take an Ethical online exam.

As I mentioned in my first posting, you have to find what your provincial sporting organization (PSO) has available in the way of support, and perhaps a provincial coach that can guide you. Shooting sports is a relatively small sport and resources are pretty thin at the club level.

In Ontario we also have a resource called Coaches Ontario, which compliments the NCCP program:-

For athlete development have a look at the Long Term Athlete Development program (LTAD) as a start point. The following website will also give some very valuable information:-

I do agree that information can be hard find, and you have to dig for it, and ask a lot of questions of the senior coaches in the sport, to the point where you are twisting their arms to run courses locally.
