Do NOT use brake cleaner to clean /degrease the exterior PARKERISING of the rifle, unless you are prepping it for refinishing.
Parkerising is basically an acid etch of the surface steel, with some color left as a side effect. Park is often applied over sand or bead blasting, which also mechanically etches the steel surfaces.
All parkerising really does is hold the lubricant in the millions of tiny pits the etching has created. Once these pits are saturated and "seasoned" with the lubricant of your choice, be it Cosmoline, non WHIMIS approved Chinese probably Carcinogenic, original M14 packing oil, or whatever, you have a tough waterproof, rustproof, self lubricating surface.
Brake cleaner is used to REALLY clean things ... it removes the carbon and any oil or grease from things that are supposed to be really clean. It is often used as a prep for bluing or plating, if Trich isn't readily available. On the M14, it is great for the CHROME LINED bores, and for the CHROME LINED Chinese gas assemblies. The CHROME on the gas assembly can and should be run DRY, as the chrome is basically self lubricating, and any oil left in the gas assembly can/will DIESEL under the pressures involved. And dieseling causes erratic gas piston movement, which causes erratic accuracy.
One of the cheapest "accurising" tips available, is to keep your gas assembly clean and DRY!!!
Brake cleaner will strip ALL the oil out of your parkerising, and leave you with a dry surface. And anyone who has ever dry humped their girl friend's jeans,
knows that movement without lubrication is NOT necessarily a good thing.
Excess wear and tear of the moving parts is not pretty,
so keep those parts well lubed on all your sports equipment ...
except for the M14 gas piston.
