Youtube video of canned Sask Elk hunt...pretty funny.

kind of looks canned. the bush is cleaned up from constant grazing. the fields are grazed down too. plus, if any of you have hunted elk, they dont stick around like that very often. a very cagey animal

Wild elk don't stand around while you have a normal conversation and are standing in the open. That was a domestic animal pure and simple in a fenced area. There is one of these hunt farms a couple of hours from my house ( sask.). When I drive by the operation to go to the lake the big bulls are often in paddocks by the highway. They are awesome to look at none the less.

Essentially what happens is animals from the paddocks are released into large high fenced areas. ( A couple of sections or so ). The guide watches where they bed the night before then takes the client to them the next day. The guide puts on a good act for the customer to make it seem oh so real.

To each his own but IMHO you are just shooting a farm animal.

PS. And as for calling I don't think a cheesy cow call followed by a bugle makes any sense. Notice how their was no response from the bull. All part of the show I guess. I wonder if they have a beer cart that drives around like at the golf course. That would be a nice touch.

Think they had a farm plate on the truck, so you don't need colors or tags. the red F means you are covered. Even for flying an airplane!! :)

IF your a farmer and hunting in a regular Big game season you still need to buy a license, and wear colors(even on private land).

Private hunt, on private land of penned farm raised Elk, no you don't need colors.

SCI has categories for "estate" raised animals taken on game farms.

I guess shooting a top 10 "estate" elk would be the same as buying a big pumpkin and entering it in the county fair.:D

This is pretty much what WildTV has turned into.

Wasn't there a 500"+ estate elk taken from Quebec last year?

Yup Canned hunt in my opinion. Even after the shot the bull just stood there. Those "calls" would have made a wild bull take off in a flash, specially in rifle season. Not to mention not wearing the official colors in Sask. Never mind the overall attitude of the shooter. Not trying to slam canned hunts, because as hunters we should all unite to fight the anti's. They love nothing more than to casue termoil and get us fighting amongst ourselves. Just not my kind of hunting.

Getting retards behind a fence and off public land - while convincing actual hunters to accept this practice - plays right into the anti's hands. It turns hunting into a business that can be regulated, taxed and ultimately will cater to far fewer gunowners.

I agree. Canned hunts should of never have been allowed in Sask. or any where else for that manner. It tarnishes the name of true hunting which has occured for hundreds of years. Next thing you now Wally world will want to take this over as well and offer it in a field right next to the tire dept. Or inevitably only the rich will be able to afford it. If you want to run an outfit like that please do not call it hunting. Kind of like taking an inflatable doll to the dance and calling it a date. You may get your rocks off but it just isn't the real thing.

Are canned hunts really any worse that the "managed" deer that are shot over bait crops and fed supplements all year to grow bigger antlers?

Yes because the Deer are still WILD....and have a chance to escape.

These canned Elk hunts are ridiculous because....

1) The Elk is pretty much domesticated. It was born and raised on a farm. Not unlike a cow or pig.

2) It has no chance to escape, it is in behind a high fence on a quarter or section of land. It is probably too tame to even know to run when the shooting starts:rolleyes:

I am not too fond of hunting over bait either but at least there isn't a guarantee that if you place some bait you will have a successful hunt as trophy animals can be nocturnal and never show up when your there.

and READ some of the comments- 22 inch drop at 200 yards????maybe a 3-4 inch drop with a hundred zero, but my elk rifles( 308/180) are ZEROED at 250-that should have been at pbr- somebody doesn't know SQUAT about rifles

The vid said he was shooting a 45-70 with open sights. If he was using a traditional heavy lead or black powder cartridge then yes they can drop quite a bit. Modern load 22" is a bit much.
