Had the day off today and decided to go out to a little known duck pond.
So I get there early... nothin visible. I go ahead and start putting out my duck decoys.

Note: Water is about waist deep and while I was putting out decoys, I didn't have my shotgun on me:(

As I am putting out the last 2 dekes (about 20 feet from shore), this flock of ducks flys over real low... about 9 of 'em. And I'm thinking, this is going to be good.

As luck would have it, not another bird (except crows) for 3 hours.
So, due to previous comitments, I gotta go. So I proceed out to the dekes (again without my shotgun) when another flock of ducks, about 20 flys over just in front of me (about 10 meters out and real low)

I know there is good huntin' there, that spot has been good to me earlier this season. Not this morning.

I left there thinking... "seriously, you've got to be kidding me???":redface::confused::confused:

I think they call that Murphy's Law don't they?

Just last weekend it was so windy that trees were snapping so my father and I were actually on the road driving down the mountain, guns in the trunk, and spotted two deer crossing the road. They both turned out to be does we found out after I went into the trees after them, but you never seen two guys scrambling for rifles faster :D

My luck may just be turning this afternoon, afterall. I explained to the wife what happened this morning and she smiled and said... well, we'll be back in an hour and a half. Better go back and get at least one.;)

Me:D:D:D

I'll let you know how it all works out.

That's standard operating procedure. Put your gun down, ducks fly over. Take a leak, ducks fly over. Drop something, ducks fly over. Next time, instead of standing on shore, just stand in amongst the decoys.

Bring a friend who's a good marksmen, get him to bring a precision rifle and hide off near the pond in a Ghillie suit. He's looking for the duck with the pair of binoculars, you know, the one giving the other ducks orders on when it's clear to fly overhead. Take out that forward observer and you'll be free and clear my friend!

Or just keep your gun on a sling around your shoulder next time, pretty easy to just drop the dekes they float. I always take my gun in the canoe when setting out and picking up the dekes.

I was worried when reading the first few lines that you were going to say somebody stole your shotgun while you were in the water.:p

My entire waterfowl season has sucked.
Geese land everywhere, except where we are.
Just so we feel better we've started telling ourselves that no one is getting birds, and all those gunshots we hear are people skeet shooting.

drache: they're ducks, not the taliban. :D

Yup. We saw no moose until we packed up for the night and were on our way to another camp to visit friends. 5 walked/ran/fell down a steep incline right in front of our truck. Funny as hell actually because there was an awkward moment when we all just stopped and looked at each other, then the moose did a three stooges thing where they bumped into each other trying to run away. One stood behind an 8 inch tree peeking out around it as if it was hidden. Wish I had it on video.

no solution for that, but I always take my rifle with me to the porta-pottie for situations like that. And to keep the video cameras away from the "dump site".:p be prepared says I.

hey man at least you got to your pond. i got lost on the way to go hunt geese. im embarrassed just to say that.( i was given the wrong address) here i go and spend a bunch of money on a gun and my license and everything and i haven't seen a single goose.

OK, so went back for another 2 hours. Luckily the pond is only 15 minutes drive from my hourse. Anyways, set out the decoys... and loitered in them for about 10 minutes, nothing.:( Got into my spot, nice and hidden and waited, called, waited... nothing.:( Finally about 1 and 1/2 hours in I decide to move to the other side of the pond (about 75-80 meters). Nothing.:( I waited 1/2 hour and had to call it a day. I stood up (and ofcourse cracked a branch) and lo and behold, 2 ducks took off from the water RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE SPOT I JUST LEFT!!!

So to sum it up, today was a comedy of missed opportunities.:p Thank God, other days have been better.:D

Lastly, the reason that I don't carry my shotty out when planting decoys is because I am using chest waders (no boat yet:redface:) and don't want to drop the shotty in the swamp/pond while fumbling with a handfull of dekes.

Thanks for the replies guys, makes the day easier to handle.

LOL,Thats a Funny Story,never Fail's eh???

My biggest issue 4me is no ducks fly by for half an hour so i'll decide to either

A.Light a smoke
B.Pour a Coffee
C.Take a Piss

No matter if I do A ,B,or C Sure as Heck a Duck always Fly's by

However it's not to upsetting because it's nothing to get your limit of Ducks while hunting in alberta.

It's a good thing that I can really enjoy just hanging out in nature, cause I have been skunked a couple time this year. Ofcourse getting birds is better!
