Not exactly sure whats going on, or if this is in the correct forum...

Anway, picked up a M48 8mm Mauser, after a few weeks finally bought some Privi 8mm mauser ammo. Then it came time for its first shooting day, and the damn bolt wont close?!

It sits nicely in the chamber but when it comes time for the bolt to close it just stops at the last little bit. Leaves a nice ring on the shoulder of the brass.

Thing has been cleaned beyond clean and it still wont close. Never had any issue like this with any of my other milsurps?

anyone got any ideas before this thing goes to the smith?

Are you feeding form the mag or single rounds? Try from the mag.

If you still have a problem, a gunsmith can deepen the chamber slightly with a reamer and it should fix the issue.

Your M48 may be a rebuild and it's possible they set the headspace wrong at the factory, though it IS unlikely.

Lots of guys have dropped a round in the chamber and try to close the bolt, the extractor won't slip over the rim. The Mauser is designed to feed from the mag, as the round come up the rim slides under the extractor as it feeds into the chamber.

+2. Trying to close the bolt on a loose single round is a good way to damage the extractor. A Mauser 98 should always have the ammo fed from the mag.

Have you thoroughly cleaned the rifle? Actually inspected the chamber?

"Leaves a nice ring on the shoulder of the brass" does sound like short chamber or, not in extractor's "claw".

A little gunk in a chamber can cause issues. Double check the extractor too. You should be able to see when closing the bolt. It just seems kind of odd that headspace issue would rear it's ugly head after so long...

Might want to try some other ammo... Privi Partisan aint the best.

I can see a single dud every few thousand rounds but an entire box of ammunition that is so far out of spec the bolt won't close?

And not to start a "my bullets are better than yours" thread hijacking, but what's wrong with Prvi ammunition?

I'm a big fan of their 198gr full power stuff myself, and prvi brass reloads well...

I had a box of PPU 6.5x55 that i had to hammer the bolt down on my m\96 with the palm of my hand to get them to chamber, the shoulders were formed really bad

remove the bolt , inspect the chamber with a flash light for obstructions or shoulder damage. also the shoulder of a seperated caseing.

Thanks for the replies guys!

It is clean as clean gets in there, and the chamber looks great. A tiny bit of cosmoline in a corner but its out now.

The bolt functions perfectly when its empty, so im sure its not the bolt itself.

The part that had me thinkin headspace was the perfect ring on the shoulder of the brass, and the rifling looks damn near perfect. Im guessing maybe a rebuild?

I take it the numbers on the bolt do not match the rifle?
As ascertained in earlier replies the chamber is clean and you're racking her good and hard with it feeding from the mag and the extractor is gripping the round properly. Sounds like its gunsmith time at this point, not much else you can do.

If you have brass, size some and see if it will chamber. I have a Yugo 24\47 that will not close on a go gauge, but will on sized brass.

Well - If the chamber is sightly undertolerance, you have the following choices:

1) Switch ammo, if that doesnt work:
2) Rather than spending 100+$ on gunsmithing, take up reloading. You can size the brass to fit the chamber, and get the best performance out of your rifle.

Yes, try different brands of ammo. Try something commercial. I've heard it from several people that some brands don't chamber easily. Tomorrow I am going to shoot my new M48BO. I never shot it yet. I got a couple of boxes of the privi stuff and a couple of boxes of Winnie super-x 170 grain. Man, this will be an expensive gun to shoot. Next on my list of purchases is reloading equipment. I will have some brass to reload now. I will let you know who my M48BO shoots these different types of ammo.

I've had a M48BO for as long as I have been shooting. These items where nearly all built as units, although I had read rumours of using left over german parts on a few rifles. Numbering will confirm all of this.

Very odd indeed!
