So I've wanted to build one of these rifles ever since I saw one up for sale on the EE a few years ago. A couple weeks ago I finally bit the bullet and picked up an all matching m48 here on CGN. I managed to find the correct Zrak 4x on-m76b scope and mounts on ebay from a Serbian fellow, who I'm pretty sure raided a military bunker at some point in the 90's because he seems to have an endless supply of yugo optics. It took about 10 hours of wiping, heating and scrubbing to get 50+ years of cosmoline out of the rifle but a few days ago the scope arrived and everything was ready for mounting. I took it down to Rod Henrickson Gunsmithing here in Edmonton and he did a phenomenal job mounting and timing the scope, in two days no less (I was quoted 6-9 weeks at another shop in Edmonton). Finally, today I brought her down to a pit about a half hour outside of town for some initial groups.

The optic is built like an absolute tank. I haven't weighed it but I would put it at about a pound and half. I dropped in on my living room floor and managed to take a nice gouge out the laminate. The scope was completely unharmed.

With the M48's semi turned down bolt, I had to file down some metal to let it clear the scope. I may have it bent farther later on but for now this works fine.

The scopes originally had tritium inserts for night shooting. Unfortunately this example's died out years ago.

Conveniently enough the turrets are cammed for the Yugo M75 Sniper ammo. I haven't had a chance to try it out at anything farther than 100m but I will report back with an updated range report once I'm able to stretch it's legs.

These were my initial groups. The one on the bottom left was my first and after some adjustments, I managed to bring it closer to the center. I was fairly happy with the results considering the ammo used (mid 50's yugo surplus, not the m75 ammo). I'm sure I'll be able to tighten them up with handloads. I had more targets however I forgot them at the range.

So that's my quick range report. So far I'm really happy with the rifle. There's little to no solid english information on these rifles that I could find so most of the build was based on photos I found around the internet. If any of you have extra information on them I'd love to hear it.

Cheers!

PS: I'd like to make a shout out to the human garbage that think too highly of themselves to pick up their trash. They're the reason we get banned from shooting on public land.

It looks like "Radiation" signs on that scope. Be worth looking into this. A Giger counter test for one thing. I would think you would need a licence for having a radiation source on site as well.

The radiation sign is just to indicate the tritium night sight, which died out probably a decade or two ago, it's fairly normal to see, even the issued c79 sights we use in the Canadian military have them. Completely safe.

Very nice! Thanks for posting pics and story. Not too many like that one roaming around. Good work! :)

Hey Frio Can you give us a hint on what to look for to find this guy??
And yeah I know rifle scopes but it goes on and on
I did type in Zrak............ nothing

I had one on my m48 and for sale a couple of weeks ago (finally sold) and ironically it seemed like no one was interested. Switched to a Leupold AR, but good on you and glad you are happy with it.

I think the problem is people see it and think it's a milsurp with a modern scope. I mean it technically is if you consider early 80's modern but they were made and used as snipers.

My M48 is still waiting to be built on this arangemt. Found an ultra rare 1992 dated M76 scope with yellow markings (in '92 they dropped the B suffix)

I have a Yugo capture K98 in this arrangement and it shoots like a laser!

Nice reproduction. Are you able to get a good cheek weld with the high scope mount? The Serbs unleashed deadly chaos with setups like that during the siege of Sarajevo.

It's a chin weld similar to a German K98 Sniper.

The Serbs had M76 rifles because they were basically the JNA.

These M48 snipers, among other rifles were built by gunsmiths for Bosnian Muslim forces, and mujahideen trained freelance snipers.

These are neat rifles, but... they have a brutally savage reputation.

There is a gentlemen from PEI who has an exquisite setup using an M48 with a ZRAK optic. Has also inspired me to tinker with the idea.

Very nice indeed! The rifle and scope are in pristine condition judging by the photos.

I bought a scope from the same fellow and i'm waiting to get it back from the 'smith, but hoping to get it tonight.

These M-48's are a super neat rifle and the prices are bound to keep going north on them, since the sources have seemed to dry up (at least for now).
I've bought about a half dozen of them in the past few months and received a super one today in the mail. S/N 9517. Likely made in the first few months of production. I've got a thread going on them although the pix of most are not up yet.

The thing I love about them is like BeaverMeat mentioned, they were made by gunsmiths during a war, so there's a lot of variation in the originals. Making it a lot easier to create a reproduction that's still historically accurate.

Speaking of that thread, did you receive my e-mail about being added to your rifle association's mailing list? Looking forward to coming up to do some shooting in the spring! Have to redial in my Mauser for some new ammunition I'm using.

Sorry, - Not wanting to hijack the thread, but since it deals with M-48's and we shoot them here on the Island, I hope it's OK if I let you know the PEIPRA website is http://www.peipra.ca/
We continue to update the site and the calender of events is pretty much good to go. We are actually going to be doing a shoot this Saturday at the Better Buy Sports range in Halifax. -Something Don't Kill Bill put together to help beat the winter blahs.
If you can, take a swing by and put some rounds downrange with us.
Cheerz!
