Does anyone own a Yugo M48A?Looking at picking one up for my son as his first big game rifle.Everything on line says they,re great.Had the oppurtunity to shoot them in Croatia in 93 and was very impressed. Will probably reload ammo as most civvy stuff is way underpowered(suspect because of the Kar 98 and restrictions in materials available during WWII).Also thinking of drilling and tapping for an optical package.Any thoughts? The newbie!

This should degrade into a flame fest shortly.....

X2 hahaha

this isn't the place to talk of defacing cherished milsurp firearms. This is the place where the purists hang out so brace yourself. I hope your PC is made of Nomex!

I have a yugo m48bo (had i known the m48a was available I wouldve grabbed that instead). Either way I set mine up as a yugo m48 "sniper". You can do it like the way i did it:

With a zrak mount (expensive ~250-300 + yugo m76 scope ~200-300)

or you can do it the ruskie way and install a psop scope:

You can also do a scout scope style, but i dont like those personally. Either way Yugo mausers are fantastic rifles and I would take mine over a mosin nagant any day.

Actually, the 8mm ammo is underpowered because of the Gew88 Commission rifle... Even the Late War Concentration Camp produced K98's will handle regular hot 8mm loads (as long as it hasn't been sabotaged)

The M48 would make a great rifle for your son to shoot! :) It may not have the history of the K98s, but it has the pedigree, and is a safe and reliable action! Plus, gorgeous to boot!

I would suggest buying a commercial made Sporting rifle for hunting though, it will in most circumstances be cheaper than sporterizing the M48, and will most likely be much more handy and accurate than the M48. Plus, you won't lose any monetary value in the M48 if it isn't sporterized! :)

Get him an M48 for open sights close up shots, plinking, and the history. Then buy him a Zastava Commercial M98 for a hunting rifle! Same action as the M48, but already in the Hunting configuration you will want! (Drilled and tapped for scope, Nice Sporter Stock, side safety, hinged floorplate) Zastava Commerical M98

Cheers!

Solid advice. OP, listen to Desert_Fox!

If we're getting into alternatives, Tradex has some sweet deals on commercial sporters based on Mauser actions for really good prices. My buddy got a Husqvarna in 8mm mauser for $250 shipped and it's just like new. Came tapped with bases.

And even then, it's only the .318 bore Gew88's that are unsafe for modern full-power .323" ammo. But that's another topic.

Oh but of course! *spoken in french accent* :D

I just didn't want to confuse anyone who was just looking for info on the regular 8mms....

Though I have yet had the chance to come across a Commission Rifle that wasn't modified for the newer S Patrone.... I know the Patrone 88 ones must be out there, but damned if I can find anything but an reworked Turk... :(

OP, if you want a hunting rifle, buy a hunting rifle instead of butchering a piece of history. The Savage Axis or Stevens 200 are both quality hunting rifles meant for scope use and available for very reasonable prices.

Or hunt with the issue iron sights and enjoy a fine milsurp rifle as it was meant to be. Many members here hunt with their milsurps (myself included) and enjoy using them as they were created, without modifications that destroy the value of the rifle.

8mm mauser ammo is few and far between if its gonna be used for hunting. Not like you can walk in anywhere and they'll have it. Surpluss stuff is even rarer.

I have an m48A i just bought on EE and i love it. Buttery smooth action and the bolt is a work of art.

With that being said, a Zastava M98 would be a much better choice like someone mentioned. Similar Mauser action with chamberings in popular hunting loads.

I have found pretty much all gun shops carry it, usually with a couple of choices. The local CT or Wal Mart may not have it, though, and it isn't cheap when you do find it. As noted, the commercial stuff is significantly underloaded due to safety concerns with older rifles.

Hack away, the Yugo Mauser has almost zero historical value. Same as the M96 Swedes. People here would make you believe any military rifle is valuable. The truth is that the Yugo M48's only value, is it's usefulness to you.

I hate to say it, but hes right....and it'll make my M48A more valuable.

With that bieng said, a brand new Zastava is only slightly more money and already comes with bases and its sportarised.

With that though in mind I think I'm going to chop the wood and tap my Swiss 1911 Schmidt rubin take a hack at a couple south American Mauser and a swed and buy 4 late production lee enfields and make a nice coffee table with em

But all butchering aside I'm sure you can find a already bubbad i mean ex-mil sporter for even cheaper then a original

All the originals I have seen had .321 bores, whether for Patrone 88 or the S Patrone. The only .318 bores I have ever seen were on czech-made barrels from the 1920's sold to places like Ecuador.

The only .323" G88's I've seen are those re-barelled by the Turks.

In my experience, it's totally OK to shoot commercial (American) 8mm in the .321" bore german 88's, but I'd be leery of shooting full-power military .323" ammo in them. American ammo usually micrometers to .321" or .322" anyhow.

Also, bear in mind the 88 in 8mmJS was intended to shoot WW1 era 154gn bullets, not WW2 era 196gn fodder.

Go right ahead. They are yours to do as you please. I have never bubbaed anything. However, doing it is not the end of the world. I have a few pretty valuable milsurp rifles... Maybe my mint 1918 Eddystone could use a nice 99 dollar bushnell :)
