Yugo Mauser cracked stock common?

You need a bit of clearance between the upper tang and the inletting for it in the stock-otherwise it will act as a recoil lug and crack the stock. You see this in M1903 Springfields as well. The fix is to add a shim (brass shimstock or a slice of aluminum pop/beercan) between the rear face of the recoil lug and the bearing surface for it in the stock.

Could also be stress cracks on the wood, these rifles weren't stored in the most ideal conditions being in the deep cold of winter to the hot humid summers. Even though they were packed in grease, they are vulnerable to wood shrinkage/warping in these types of environments.

Beat me to it!

I have bought two rifles in this state that the owners refused to shoot because of the crack behind the tang. The fix was about 10 cents worth of shim stock and some epoxy.

Just check for clearance after you shim it. Sometimes the in-letting is just wonky and some needs to be removed.

EDIT: Beat me to it by a few years... haha.

Necro-post revival!
