I've been on the fence about getting a Yugo SKS but I'm unsure if it would be something more along the line of being a safe queen stow away collectable or your everyday shooter like any other SKS.

Question being should I get one and use it regularly with non corrosive and corrosive ammos (cleaned properly) or should I avoid it unless I plan on collecting them.

Any help is appreciated thanks

Collecting SKSs or Mosins or Enfields etc is like opening a can of worms. The choice is yours.
If you want a shooter grade gun, then buy any run of the mill CanTire special. If you already have a collection going and you're missing a Yugo, then buy it. Remember, one or 2 guns don't make a collection!

Buying one pricier SKS, calling it a collection and never shooting it makes no sense to me.

IMHO, the only reason to go with a Yugo is for collector purposes. It sort of makes me laugh how availability drives the pricing and reputations of these guns. Give any American the choice between a Yugo and a Russian SKS, and anyone down there would pick the Russian, and pay more for it. The Russian is generally regarded amongst US shooters/collectors as the best of the sks's.

I have two Yugo 59-61 bought from Marstar for 300.00 a piece in 2006 since that time both have seen 2K each of ammo and still look very good, i would not part with them under one K each, those are simply the best SKS available... JP.

OP, you don't mention the grade of the rifle you want to purchase or the type of shooter you are.

Some of the Yugos that came into Canada were unissued since manufacture. Shooting such a rifle is immediately evident to people that know what to look for and the first couple of hundred rounds could easily knock a few hundred dollars or more off it's resale value.

Caramel, I have a couple of Yugo SKS rifles. Neither of them come equipped with the grenade launcher system only because the look didn't appeal to me. When I purchased them, I purchased one that was unissued and it still stands in the safe, covered in cosmoline and wrapped in plastic. The other was used but in close to excellent condition. I shoot it occasionally with non corrosive ammo. Not trying to protect it just have a few others to shoot as well.

I did a similar thing with Chinese SKS rifles recently. One is a mixmaster issued piece and the other is a pristine out of the box unissued all matching piece. Likely the mixmaster will see a fair bit of use.

I would have a tough time giving anyone $1K for a used SKS by the way. But then again, value is in the eye of the beholder.
