Hey guys,

I just got my SKS in the mail today which I bought from another CGN member. As soon as I got it I noticed a few issues.. ill start with the bigger issues. (Sorry in advance for my lack of knowledge, this is the first time I have even handled an SKS )

1. Almost right after picking up the rifle, I saw that the sight hood and front sight assembly are crooked. I took a picture to show what I mean, it looks exactly like it does in the photo... it is way too far to the left. Also, I was told the front sight post broke off, so he got a new one mailed to me. But I am not able to screw it in... any tips?

2. I noticed that there a couple holes drilled in the gun  one through the gas tube, another through the flash hider etc.. any ideas why this is? If there is a hole in the gas tube would that possibly cause an issue once I shoot it?

3. I forget the term, but the take-down lever that allows you to remove the receiver cover is broken, any ideas where I could buy a new lever and then attach it?

The holes are all normal, some are for the pins that hold the parts, and the ones in the gas cylinder are gas bleed holes. The crooked sight and broken takedown lever howver are not normal.

Thank you for the replies, I was sent 2 photos of the rifle. Now looking back on it, I can see where the take-down lever should have been. But before that I didn't even know a lever was supposed to be there. The seller made no mention of that or the crooked sight.

He did say that he broke the front sight post, and he did get a new one mailed to me. But that was after I paid him the money, and I didn't want to make a big deal about it, as I assumed I could install it myself... but even IF I could install it, the sight is so crooked it would be useless...

Were you expecting these defects? If not I'd be demanding a refund immédiatement. Your rifle looks pooched.

agreed.

rylan: i strongly recommend you have a smith check it out before you start shooting it . dont know if the barrel was removed or the flash hider.

to answer your questions.
1. i have a tiny post tool that will help to install it easier . i will pm you .
2. holes in gas tube is normal . holes in flash hider is normal also but not in that up position , should be at the bottom .
3. place an ad on EE for the take down lever or order one from sksman.com .

I would demand a refund of some sorts even if you still intend to keep the rifle...shows bad form if you were not told about these defects prior to purchase...

Someone posted a link to an article on here a while ago about a guy that had an SKS that had a hole drilled in the underside of the barrel, under the handgaurd. Aparently this was a way to deactivate them somewhere. Anyway, the guy that had it did not know about this and shot a round through it, of course it blew up.

Not saying that this is the case here, but seeing how bubba had a go at yours, I'd inspect it very carefuly.

$200.

Just another question, does anybody know how I can replace the takedown lever once I get a new one?? I don't see how you can take it out

i guess $200 is a discount for a M59/66.

use a dremel to cut the shaft between the lug and the lever .

make sure when you buy a new lever , it comes with a locking lug that you install after the lever shaft is slid in.

BTW: you do know about the russian SKS shipments? you can get a nice refurb for $200 . :)

I wonder why the front sight is at an angle. Hmm... Are those vise marks and wrench marks all over it? Don't ever show this pictures to hicaliber, he'll rape you for them in public.

Wow! That poor rifle... Looks like Bubba was having a bad day and took it out on the rifle. Looks like someone tried to remove the front sight assembly and the grenade launcher. Hows the bore? If the bore is as bad as the rest of the rifle there will be no point trying to shoot it...

You are also missing the grenade launcher sight. It mounts between the front sight assembly and the gas block. Hope the red rings on the grenade launcher do not signify a decommissioned rifle...

Looks like the takedown lever is almost in the position for it to slide out. It locks at 3 o'clock, and is open at 9 o'clock, so if you can turn it another 10 degrees ccw or so it should come loose, then you'll have to pry it out a bit, it should come strait out. its about as long as the width of the receiver cover, minus about an eigth or three sixteenths of an inch.
