I have a Yugoslavian M59/66 rifle and it has a bare, unfinished stock with pencil markings on it. It kind of looks silly and not very military at all in a bright orange stock. All I've done to it so far is put a bit of BLO on it to protect it when I shoot it. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions for a good and proper looking finish? My understanding is that these rifles were given to soldiers as is and they finished them themselves how they liked.

And just leave it looking orange and shiny?

It will look amazing with 8+ coats of BLO. 48 hours to dry between coats (a week is better) and buff with 000 steel wool for a satin finish. Thin coats, hand rubbed, should NOT go on tacky. Wipe excess off with a clean cloth after letting stand for 30 minutes or so.
