I'm planning a hunt in zone 10. Season began August 1st last year. Could you
Yukoners tell me if this about the start of the rut up there?

Rut here seems to take hold in mid through late September. I have found the best hunting the last week of September and the first week of October. Others say early September but I always find the bulls more active and likely to come to a call later than that.
Why_not? on the board here does moose calling classes, he is the man for you to talk too. Great guy too.

Now there is a class I would like to take!!!!!!!!

Thanks Casull, it's worth my while and money to take the classes. I'll look him up, I hope he's in southern Alberta. Otherwise, I'll go with the DVD. I spoke to my cousin in Whitehorse just before getting your reply, he and you are in agreement on the rut.

Why_not? is here in Whitehorse. And his classes are through the HEED program locally and free to the best of my knowledge. Send him a note though, he will give you the full scoop.

Casull is right on,i never start moose hunting till after the 10th. of Sept.A lot of the oldtimers will tell you the best hunting is after the New Moon in Sept.Which happens to be on the 11th. this year.:D

I just finished talking with my cousin in Whitehorse. He said exactly the same thing. I want to call him an old timer, but he's 1 year and 4 months younger than I, so he's a young buck. Yup, after the first full moon. I was up there fishing this year, it is now officially official, I'm coming up boyz. I've also confirmed that I'll be flying. Spoke with Airnorth today about bringing my rifle. This airline is so cool. No problem, the lady said, we have guns in the cargo hold all the time. Just package the bolt and the ammo separately. I'll be tweeking and double tweeking my .338 loads this summer. :dancingbanana:

gitrdun, I just dropped off my Bull's skull at the taxidermist's down at Turner Valley. You may or may not know Cris and Cathy Short, anyway they had a Yukon Bull there and it was incredible how huge/heavy the skull structure on it was.
It had a 65" spread and four tines on each of the front palms, very heavy.
That's just to whet your craving to go! LOL

When we were in Northern Alberta for our hunt, on Oct 6th we stumbled across a cow that started bawling in a snow squal. The sound was terrible, something like crossing a mule with a huge bear stuck in a leg snare, mixed with alot of volume and vibrato. I couldn't believe a Moose could make a sound like that, it really was an aweful sound. It didn't take long for my Bull to come charging out of the brush, making a beeline for her. The only thing that slowed his charge for her was a 270gr slug, he was on a mission.

The next day we upped the ante so to speak and when we can across Nuggets Bull, we similated the same crazy rank sounds we heard the day before and not ten minutes later Nugget had his bull on the ground too.
If you're passing through Cochrane sometine I'd be happy to give you a demo but only if you promise not to laugh! I am shy don't you know! LOL
The moose up till then already seemed to have cows with them and weren't reponsive to our calls at all.

Hope this helps, and I wish I was going with you next fall. Good hunting!

If I come to the Calgary gunshow, I will give you a shout and we can do a duet.......of course I always call better if my friend Jack Daniels comes along to cheer me up.

I have a bottle waiting :D. If you need a place to stay you are more than welcome to crash at our place. Bring Dude along and a few guns, might be fun :)

Hey you guys, you best NOT leave Noel and I outta the picture man. Noel, I will be taking you up on your offer. My cousin says that he and the other fellow that we'll be hunting with have the calling under control. Just as a back-up , I want to learn as well. My friend has a 62" on the wall, what a monster. Taking out the head and horns is a two man job.

Are you guys going to the Thorncliff show on saturday or waiting for the bigger one at easter???

Gonna pass on Thorncliffe(SP). I can think of better things to do if the weather gets a bit better :)

Not really looking for much anyways...

Sounds to me like you have it timed about right.

Unless the weather really does something really crazy, anytime after the 10th should be fine. Certainly from the 15th to the end of September will be a rodeo out there! :D

The moose hunting workshop that the Game Branch puts on each year is usually the weekend after Labour Day. The moose calling session is always Saturday morning, so the 9th this year. It would be neat if you could be there!

I'd best get Nugget down for the demo then, I think I will have a hard time no breaking out in laughter, whiskey or not! LOL
He did most (all) of the calling up there too as I couldn't do it in front of even him and keep a straight face.

I'm passing on thorncliffe as well, all the same stuff will be at the Easter show, just on another table. It's too bad, Perhaps I should rent a table there, get a megaphone and scream bloody murder Cow moose style for all to enjoy.
Of course you guy's would have to be my bodyguards for when they try to toss me out!

Why not?: I'll be talking to my cousin about this. I sure would like to make my flight plans to take this in before going out. I'll be in touch.

Noel: I'm sure you wouldn't stand out in a croud of weirdos.

I've been to one of those classes. Definitely worth scheduling you dates around!

When I was there with Ted, we saw a moose skull that measured 78" coming off the float plane. It was found on the side of the lake and was bleached out.

Good excuse to buy that 375Magnum, if you need one. :)
