Hello fellow CGNers,
I'm planing to go down the yukon river with my dad and brother probably next summer. I was wondering if any of you have done it before (canoe + camping). Probably from Whitehorse to Dawson City.
Any ideas which outfiters are good ?
And most importantly what kind of gun should I bring along :D

I'd PM Riverrat, Whynot or Casull. These fellas are resident Yukoners. As for the gun, u wouldn't go wrong with a guidegun in .45-70 blastin 350 grainers at 2100fps.:D

Wolf... by Thomas McGuire...About a young man (new to the wilderness) and old Charlie a Alaskan sourdough,trapper,Canoeist .....The trip was taken in the early 70's....enjoy
Firearms for trip????...what ever you have now plus or to include a .22 Rim Fire...:)
 
I have been down the Yukon rive a number of times. So have a few of the other members on here. It's a great trip to say the least, you should see lots of game and some great sites and gold rush history.
Are you coming to hunt with an outfitter or is the gun just for bear protection?
Win94's choice would be a good one for bear defence as would a short shotgun. If you are in a canoe, you should be thinking about water resistance as well, so stainless might be a good idea.
I'm sure you'll have a great time. It's an incredible trip. What time of year are you going? Know that in the summer you will have lots of company on the river, it's a very popular float these days.
Enjoy it, it's different than anything in the south.
 
Well the gun is mostly for bear/cougar protection...
We are mostly going there for the canoe and camping aspect not hunting.
My dad went to visit yukon by car a few years back... looks awsome.
Basically more of a familly outing :D

Figure a 12 gauge is good but what do I know about yukon LOL
 
Idid that trip when I was about 16, wiht some friends. We took a 303 that was chopped and sporterized...:D

Unfortunatley, never had to kill any bears.:dancingbanana:
 
Lots of bears, black and grizzly, you will be looking long and hard to see a cougar though. I have seen one ever in the wild in the Yukon and I have been here 13 years now. They are very rare and all sightings are requested to be reported.
Nothing wrong with your 12ga. for a camp and defence gun.

 Er, most likely. But probably inadvisable to fire from a canoe if Mr. Griz. makes an unfriendly visit.

I once shot a bison with a .50 loaded to .505 Gibbs performance or slightly better. It sure worked. I shot a grizzly with a .460 Wby. #1 one time too and a black bear, yeah it's enough gun alright. I am very curious too as to what name Gibbs505 is going to go by once he sells that rifle. I got the impression it was his pride and joy. Oh well, you have to stir the pot once in awhile to keep the brew interesting I guess.

You can get Brennekes (3" 1-3/8 oz) from Accuracy Plus in Peterborough Ontario. Nice folks to deal with. 705-740-2712. Get the best slugs you can for your adventure. Pass on the Remingtons, if you must use a foster slug, I'd go Federal.
