Zastava 7.62x39 M85?

I had my eye on these for a bit, and yeah there are quite a few 527's listed on there, but the price is now over $1000 for one. That seems a bit too much money for me.

That was a lot of what decided me. I've tried the 527's. They are a great rifle, and a better rifle than the Zastava M85. They are not $400 better.

Al Flaherty's has the 527 7.62x39 listed on their website for $892 if anyone is interested. Once again I considered it even at that price, but with taxes it ends up being over $1000.

I saw one for sale and the seller mentioned that he had to bring in a base from the states? Does anybody have one with two piece weaver bases on it? What are the weaver numbers? I want to buy one of these rifles, but not if I can't scope it easily. I would prefer the two piece weaver bases, and then just some weaver tipoff rings. Don't know about the scope yet, maybe a leupold rifleman 3x9-40? Thanks for any info guys. Good shooting, Toni.

I don't know the base numbers off hand, but weaver does make a base that fits them. The zastava used to be sold as a remington model 799 (from memory, might have been 798), and also as a charles daly import rifle too i believe. There is info on them.

If you check out Corwin Arms he has a base/ring combo that fits the zastava's as well.

I got a two-piece from Brownell's. It is a Warne #M880/806M , cost under $20 USD and seems to work well. Canada Ammo has a 20% off sale on this weekend.
As a side note, I find that the military surplus ammo fired cases stick in the chamber and require a lot of force to eject. The neck of the cases have a scalloped ridge carved into the varnish, or whatever the ammo is coated with.
I will try to scour some off with steel wool or crocus cloth to see if that helps. I might even clean the chamber extra well and look for burrs.

I know you are looking for a two piece base, but thought I should mention that we will have a one piece picatinny available within a couple weeks for this rifle, similar to the one we make for the Savage Axis.

Canada Ammo will also stock these.

I expect them to retail around $28 Canadian.

Thank you Geoff B for the info about the sale! I was going to wait until Monday to order my rifle. Needless to say, I just finished the check out and I now own a M85! Can't wait to get it and try it out with the irons. I still have to do a little bit of research regarding the weaver bases though. Thanks to all, and good shooting, Toni.

Weaver mount numbers are 71A (front) and 23 (rear)

What kind of ammo does this rifle like?
Romanian?
Chinese corrosive?
LCW?
Anyone tried these? Thanks in advance.

I've run Czech surplus, Chinese surplus, the Dominion non corrosive, and Hornady SST through mine. My rule of thumb is that group sizes = 1/2 or smaller than what I would get from my scoped and shimmed SKS for any given ammo. Somewhat of a non-scientific guestimate.

As for corrosive - I am not worried in the least. Chrome line bore means it can take the abuse, but I always remember to give it a thorough cleaning after. If you're used to cleaning an SKS after shooting corrosive, then cleaning a bolt action after shooting corrosive is a breeze in comparison. Not to mention that on any given day, I'll put 20-30 rounds, tops through my M85 - just byt the very nature of the type of gun it is. With my SKS's, I don't even bother dragging one of them out unless I'm planning on putting a few hundred rounds through it. The difference in build-up in the barrel is significant, and makes cleaning it all that much easier.

Had to order one, I talked to a guy at work who echoed what grelmar is saying. Canada Ammo happened to put the sale up a few days later, my credit card has taken a hit.
