Zastava Commerical M98 - Quality?

The one thing I have considered on these is the folks who sell them.
Great merchants that offer great products.
I think if they weren't of the buying quality, Tony and Anthony wouldn't be
selling them.
Give them a call and ask the questions.
You will get honest answers from them.

I have one Zastava made commercial 98, a Charles Daly originally in .243 then rechambered to 6mm-06AI. Overall quality of the machine work and tolerances is pretty good. Accuracy is sub moa with the few loads I've tried. I also have owned a couple others in the past and have handled a few more from friends and gunshops. All were well made, decent rifles. Zastava uses a high quality modern alloy in their 98 actions.

The finish on the wood of the few I've seen in the recent batch is not the greatest, but certainly good enough for a hunting rifle. I can't comment on the synthetic stocks because I have yet to handle one.

I also have a stainless version on order, but it won't be here for some time yet, and I can't wait to get it.

These are a very good Mauser 98 action rifle IMO. The Charles Daly or Remington being the ones with the better wood stocks. The plastic stocks, and I have not tried one, do not review very well (i.e. take it off and put-a-good-stock-on-it kind of reviews). I traded my Remington 798 simply because, with the nice walnut and pretty bluing, it was far too nice to be a hunting piece. Very accurate too.

I believe the" plastic stocks" are Butler Creek..........Harold.......I'd like one in 9.3x62 as they make one

I have one in 30-06 [wood stocked] It seems like it is quite well made.
A tiny bit "rough" in the bolt raceways, but that will self-correct in a few dozen rounds.
Very accurate with the two loads I have tried so far.
Stock has nice figure on it, but I will hunt it, regardless.
Eagleye.

Just picked up one yesterday in 30-06 at Gagnon's in Oshawa. This one has the plastic stock and it (the stock)doesn't appear to be anything special. The blueing and general fit and condition of the rifle appear to be excellent.Have to get a scope mounted , get to the range and see how it shoots. I bought it with the idea of using the action for another project but depending on how it shoots I may leave it as is and use it for a backup/nasty weather moose rifle. Bac4

I used one in .458 in Africa a few months ago, "Utilitarian" certainly embodies the rifle. I found it a bit rough, though solidly constructed, and functional. The synthetic stock had been removed and junked by the owner immediately, and the sights replaced. Function and accuracy were decent, and it was a nice weight. The owner did admit he wished he'd just bought a Ruger or CZ in the first place as after his modifications to bring it up to that standard, he was equal with Ruger and CZ prices. He felt a Ruger 77 was a significantly better rifle, and says next time he will go that way.

Take a polishing wheel to the bolt and you have a solid M98. Barrels are good on them..stocks have mixed reviews based on preference. Really if you want something cheap that works get one. If you want fancy and pretty like most people here do then pass.
