I have two of these rifles now. The second one I bought has nicer wood, so I will keep it and sell the other one. Took it out today and sighted it in. Fired about 20 rounds of really nice FNM Portugese milsurp. Several rounds required a second strike. Can't remember what I used in the first rifle, likely Yugo surplus, but it fired first strike very time.

I am hoping it is because the primers required a good strong strike. I'll try #2 with some Yugo and/or handloads. I'll also try #1 with the FNM ammo to see if that rifle will set them off. Flinch factor was quite obvious.

Curious to know why you strayed from the Mauser 98's?
Proven werk cavailas.

Well, I haven't really "strayed" that far...have I?? :p Since I've been buying guns, starting at about age 14 with a second hand Cooey 84 12 ga., I think the #1 Zastava was the first brand new "big rifle" I ever bought, other than a matched set of 1967 Canadian 94's. Heaven only knows how many 98's I've bought since that Cooey. Now things have really gotten out of hand, because I bought a new CZ 557 in 8x57 and the #2 CZ 8x57.

What can I say? I'm guessing that likely the primers on the FNM ammo need a good old 98 to set them off. I'll solve that mystery as soon as we are done combining. We are going to give it a try tomorrow after a bit of rain.

Looky: Is dit goed genoeg?

Sounds like a real looker and hope it shoots well. Betting divvy primers solve the issues too

Little update: I took the VZ24 that I have on EE and tried a few of the FNM 8x57 rounds mentioned above. Of the 8 or 9 rounds, 3 or 4 did required a second strike, so that tells me the primers are difficult to set off. Darn! It is such nice looking ammo. I bought a case from the old SIR years ago, but I think the rounds I've tried are from a batch I bought later. So, back to the drawing board.

Wolfe sell M98 springs as factory, or in +2 and +4 pounds. A simple switch to a stronger spring might be the solution. Also, wash any grease out of the bolt guts.
