Zastava M70 Mauser scope mounting options

I'm running Talley mounts on 3 of mine with no issues. That includes the steel and lightweights.

someone I knew would also have good info here lol and nice to see the Accupoint is long enough to fit that action if just barely

Gotcha! looked like you had it right to the very end of the available tube there hence the "just barely" comment. Glad to hear it works. I've been going with an amber as well. Just regular amber dot but a fan of the post/triangle as well

Joel, Zastavas are luck of the draw. They aren't manufactured to the same standards that are consistently achievable with CNC machines.

They're mostly hand fitted by relatively skilled tradesmen.

They are priced so that the rifles shoot acceptably, with just enough finish to please a non discerning shooter.

Remington brought in their own QC standards and enforced them with a fitter they hired when Zastava produced the Rem 798 for them.

They were OK, but suffered from a lack of CNC finishing and tight tolerances.

I had a couple of them when they first became available.

The bores were perfect all around, but the chambers were a bit on the excessive side, built to CIP specs.

Good description of the ones I've owned or had a chance to shoot. No stranger to the platform or its particulars but great info for someone who never came across one before or didn't know what to expect.

You started this thread stating that you couldn’t mount scope on one. Lucky? 🤣

Can't say buying other mounts was really a big problem.

So asking what kinda problems you've had with em was a sincere question. What have you seen that makes em a crapshoot?

Quality control has been a persistent problem with Zastava. Why they can't get the scope base holes lined up with the barrel (or even with each other) is beyond me. It has nothing to with the precision of modern CNC machining. The same problem does not exist with old hand-fitted Husqvarna rifles for instance.

I have a stainless 9.3x62 with a crack in the reciever down to the front recoil lug. I am assuming a flaw in the steel was to blame. Anyone lookimg for parts? Lol

True, but I've had similar scope base issues on Remington and Wincesters. Not as many mind. - dan

Same here. Had a Rem 700 heavy barreled 308 that shot tiny little groups but the rear screw holes were offline and I needed the STD rings/bases there too. And problems with Win 70 Classics aren't exactly unheard of lol. Why do people like 5 digit serials better than 6 for example?

I always kinda wondered if windage adjustable mounts were just much more standard over there....or if they really did subcontract it to someone's idiot nephews shop.

They take the same weaver bases as a Remington 798. The 798 is just a Zastava rifle. There are a few "mauser" bases and if you get the wrong ones, your scope mount will likely be off especially if you're using a scope that doesn't have much adjustment to begin with like a Swarovski Z3, Z5 or a Vortex Daimondback. Even then, the correct bases may require a shim or two.

Agreed. This is why I say, the most consistent in quality Zastava's with the least amount of issues I've had were the 2014 date of manufacture which were brought in by Tradex. Those ones came with the ugly monte carlo style stock. The early 2000's dated ones tend to be rough and the last import batch seems to have the most issues like head spacing issues, very low quality in stock finish, and some of the receiver not being tapped properly. A lot of the old stock (70's-90's era) that SFRC brought in are pretty rough especially fit and finish of the stocks. The receivers look decent though.

Those funky monte carlo stocked rifles were/are nice alright

Thanks for the info on the latest from SFRC. Old stock as in they were built on unused M48 actions? Wondered about that since they had the charger guide, wing safety and it looked like the bolt handle was bent, not machined/originally made to clear a scope

The prices were tempting
