Zastava M70

I'm looking at buying a synthetic M70 in 30-06 as my first rifle. Does anyone have any experience with it? Are there other rifles that are "better" at this price range (they sell for $770 from tradex)?

I think they give more value in the large cartridges. A $800 .458 WM or .375 H&H is a bargain, while in the smaller cartridges there is a lot of competition in that price bracket.

By all accounts they are pretty good Mauser clones. Function well and are accurate. Fit and finish is average, the new style Win Mod 70s give a better fit and finish at a bit higher price.

I had one in 375 H&H. Excellent rifle. These Zastava's have been imported under many different names: Rem 798, and Interarms Mark X are two i know. The Zastava plant has been around for many years, probably in the 100-150 year range.

Gagnon sports is listing a 30-06 for $629.

few years ago the one that came to Canada were not coming directly from Serbia but from USA with a different stamp on them USSG.

no open sights too and the action was harder than the next lots.

the last batches were better than this one for sure and not any stamp like that on them.

stainless ones are coming from Remington tooling with the 798 business they had.

Thanks for all the info guys. In the process of making my decision on whether to buy one. Just trying to justify it in addition to all my other gun purchases for the last two months.

As an aside, I inherited a Zastava full stock carbine in 30-06 from my uncle in back home in Europe that's got to be at least 25 years old by now (possibly older). He hunted extensively but outside of a few scratches on the stock the rifle looks great.

Actually, the tooling is their own, but the coating process is from Remington.

I think when they talk about the M70 Zastava, it is really about the M70 sliding safety and the CRF. And of course the M70 was basically a mauser action with a american name attached to it.

They do both a M/98 with swing safety and the M/70, which is a spinn-off of the FN Supreme, just like the "Santa-Barbara". The FN Supreme itself is an evolution of a streamlined K98, following the same fashion as did Brno earlier with their 21/22 series. Mechanically, only the bolt sleeve / trigger / safety were ever changed and the receiver evolved to give place to an optic sight... so, the changes are more esthetic, not mechanical.
