Zastava M98

Anyone here has experience with the Zastava M98 .308? Looking for a deer rifle and I have narrowed down to the Weatherby Vanguard S2 and M98.
 
Halong, save yourself some grief and get a Tika T3 Lite Stainless. Once you try the T3 , the other 2 you mentioned will feel like soulless clubs with bad triggers. You won't regret it.

The Zastava would be ok...just don't hold your breath for any parts. The S2 (as are some others that folks will chime in to name right away) is a fine rifle you will use as your goto for many years to come. I find the T3 to be the same metal and polished bolt with about $200 of Sako hype thrown into the mix.

Ya, bring it on, I'm a former Sako Hunter owner and glad to be rid of that overpriced boat anchor! I am not overly fond of the tupperware magazine of the T3 either. Cost my son a nice Coyote too with the plastic's tendency to deform when snapped into place in a hurry (the one time he needed it, of course).

Nothing wrong with the Zastava, it's a M/98 and most part fitting the FN Supreme or Parker-Hale Mausers will work (there's a lot of aftermarket parts made for them since the '60s).
Make a search on the forum with the word "Zastava" only and you will find a lot of infos I and others recently posted.

The main difference between the Tikka (and most other push feed designs) and the Mausers is that most of the "newer" designed rifles are made to comply with ease of manufacturing on CNC machines, hence are simplified designs, while the Zastava M/98's are closer to what used to be done prior the CNC coming (but some parts are now made on CNC machines). Then, the choice between "modernity" and "classic" ends up in your hands.
 
I'd personally go with the Vanguard. I've never had any experiance with the Zastava but i'm sure their fine rifles as well. Now for the Tikka T3's I have owned one and I have to say I wasn't very fond of it theres better budget rifles out there for less money the Weatherby being one!!!!!!
 
Buy the Vanguard.
I have owned the Zastava, and while a fine rifle built on the tried and true mauser 98 design, it is a bit "rough" [The roughness will polish out over time]
I have 3 - Vanguards, and I really like these rifles.
Well built, accurate and aesthetically pleasing.
BTW, I have also owned T3 rifles, and have none now.
You figure it out. lol.

Not sure about the Zastava. Last two rifles i bought were Weatherby. Bought a Mark V sporter and loved it. Saw the Vanguards on sale so i picked one up. I was very impressed with the wood,trigger and action for the price of this rifle even if i would have paid the regular price. Shoots awesome as well. As far as Tika's go......i don't care how good they shoot or what the price is. They are Fugly!
 
I don't know the Vangaurd well enough, so I won't comment there, but I have used a PH's Zastava .458 Win Mag in Africa once. It was pretty darn rough around the edges, it is a budget rifle and felt like it, it works though. I'm a Ruger guy, a Ruger Hawkeye makes the Zastava look quite poor for very little extra money.
 
I can tell you from personal experience that the new Zastava M98's (Made in Serbia) are extremely rough. However - I may have just had a bad one... The bolt wasn't even true with the action and the rails looked like they were milled by an ape with an angle grinder.

The Pre-civil war Zastava's are a different story. I love my "Made in Yugoslavia" Zastava.

However, I agree with Ardent. That is, if you want CRF.
