I am wondering what is the story behind these rifles, where do they come from?
All in the same caliber, some with Mosin sling,
maybe Eastern Europe.

What happened to new production Zastava? Discontinued or just not imported into Canada anymore? Seems like it’s been a couple years since I’ve seen any in stock

Look at the receivers. Many of these are ex military rifles likely factory sporterized. These would be in 8x57. They were probably imported from Serbia or whereabouts.
Yes some do, but they may be early production comercial receivers; others though have no receiver cut and the side safety like my rifle does..

Someone posted that they have diverted all of their production capacity to military contracts. I regret not buying a couple of their .22 rifles when they were available.

I've had a couple in the past...8mm, 9.3x62...and thought they were a terrific bargain; wish I'd kept the 9.3...

Very nice deep blue...decent walnut...decent trigger...very good accuracy...for the money they were nice solid traditional hunting rifles, and responded well to whatever tweaks and mods you might want to try. I never had any sort of problems or issues with mine.

Many of the half-stock models were made with a weird dished-out area on both sides of the stock, right at the trigger. That was pretty much my only beef with them, and it's obviously a minor one.

Really wish I still had that 9.3x62...

Does anyone have experience with these? How do these compare to a used savage axis, ruger american, etc?
I have one in 6.5 x 55; bought it brand new. No comparason; these rifles are supurb examples of Mauser Controlled Feed actions.
Bluing is way better, and I don't mind the bavarian stock and mine is made from pretty fancy walnut.

Why do you say that ?
I've owned the American, axis & and the Zastava in 6.5x55 and a 375 h&h. The Axis and Americans have their advantages - mainly being lighter.

The Zastava seems much better built, heavier, all steel floor plate, follower, etc. proper blueing, very good adjustable trigger. The action is based on the FN 98 variant so aftermarket parts are interchangeable. I have found them to be very accurate as well.

I have also owned a few surplus Husqvarna rifles like the 1640 and prefer the Zastava. The stocks are stronger and don't tend to crack as often. The trigger is also way better.

This is my experience as well.

I hunt with one in 30.06, shoots under moa with 180gr partitions, never had a problem, very happy with mine.

How commonly available is ammo for this 8x57JS caliber?

Is it something you would normally find on a shelf at your local gun store?
