Gagnon's had a gun sale before Christmas...I was lucky enough to grab a 9.3x62 Mannlicher-stocked model for $549. I was not enchanted with the wood; straight grain, very blonde, very plain, indifferently finished and checkered. In every other way the gun is a gem. Slightly rough bolt smoothed up beautifully with a few evenings of cycling and polishing. Lovely gloss blue metal finish. Decent trigger, easily adjusted to a very nice crisp pull. All steel parts, including bottom metal. Iron sights were nicely centered, and perfectly adjusted at 50 yards, right out of the box. My gun's barrel was completely free-floating, which I've never seen on a fullstock rifle. I bought this just because I wanted to play with the cartridge, but the gun is a keeper that I look forward to use for hunting.
One unusual item cropped up: I initially scoped the gun using Weaver bases (45 and 46, I think?), and when I decided I liked it I grabbed a FN Mauser Leupold base when I saw one in Cabela's. The two rear holes lined up, but the front hole was off about 1/16 inch. Couldn't use the base and went back to the Weavers...I didn't see the point in drilling and tapping a new hole, as well as drilling the base. FWIW, the Weaver bases, with a set of vintage Weaver low bases, mounts a Leupold Vari-XII 1-4x scope so that the bolt just clears the eyepiece when cycled. Looks just right on this gun, and the Monte Carlo stock lines your eye up perfectly. Nice little gun/scope combo.
