Hey --

Who in Canada carries the Zastava Z5 .22lr ? I have heard good things about them.

Thanks in advance.

Try contacting Baïkal Canada, as they are the Canadian distributor / importer for the Zastava rifles. They should tell you if they are importing them or not.

If you buy one try to buy at least one extra mag, they are hard to find and will only get more scarce as years pass.

I bought one from GAGNON SPORTS in hmr just last week and it came with 2 mags.

Any more shooting reviews? These look nice for under $300 but I haven't heard anything about them being tackdrivers...

Still trying different ammo in mine along with tuning the mags. The forward feed lips dig into the bullet during feeding making it difficult to chamber the round. I filed the feed lips back so they simply guide the bullet rather than engrave it. This eliminated the random flyers I was getting. So far off a bipod/rear bag prone @ 50 yds Ive had some sub 1" groups with Rem subsonics. I'll be switching to my front bag as Im not all that experienced with a bipod. The trigger on mine is horrible but they look easy to tune. With a bag up front and the trigger worked down to 2 or 3 lbs I expect 1/2" to 3/4" with the subs. FWIW the Remington model 5 only comes with 1 mag, at least mine did. Gagnon Sports has the 9 rders for $34.99. Total was around $90 shipped for 2 mags. The only plastic is the buttplate, everything else is nicely machined and deep blued. Craftsmanship on these rifles is outstanding.

I walked out of SAIL with one today unexpectedly...well not THAT unexpectedly :) All they had was .22mag which was what I was after anyway, and the first one he brought out had the nicest walnut I have ever seen AND it's on a $299 rifle. Didn't know it came with 2 mags, so picked up an extra anyway...only $20. I'm a sucker for unique wood, and this one has a beautiful dark walnut grain on one side, and a much lighter grain on the other...you can see where they meet on the top of the butt and bottom of the forestock, awesome wood. I'll get some picks up on the weekend out in the sun. The checkering is kind of poorly done, but you have to look pretty close to see that...feels good and grippy anyway. Buttplate and follower are plastic, but that seems to be it.
Looks like there are 2 machined lugs in the rail that will take weaver rings maybe? Haven't tried the scope on it yet....pile of sticky oil preservative on these things I don't feel like cleaning up tonight :)
Hope it shoots as good as it looks.

I have the Rem model 5 in a 22 mag and mine loves CCI Maxi mag ammo, and tried numerous kinds to get this figured out, about the only ammo I haven't shot yet is the newer Vmax 30gr. FS

Damn it, Hitzy beat me to that .22WMR! :) I just got the last one in .22LR from Sail in Beloeil yesterday. I really wanted one in .22WMR with a laminated stock instead, but they didn't have any left so I got the .22LR version with what they said is a walnut stock (I am not convinced of it, yet, it feels way to soft for walnut). I really have no idea what the wood is, it has two different colors but that could be only a bad application of stain. They said it was probably Turkish walnut, but they seem to know as much about this rifle as I do. Mine came with two 5 round mags and I got another two 10 round mags for $30 a peace (way too much for what they are, if you asked me).

I haven't shot it yet since I've had it for only 24 hours, but it looks like a fairly well made rifle, machining marks notwithstanding. It seems a much better rifle than a Brazilian made CIL .22LR I have, but not as well finished/machined as the Savages. I also do believe the take-down screws could have used a little bit smarter engineering. Their arrangement is kind of silly. However, just its trigger had me sold on it. It is adjustable for weight and take-up (haven't checked if I can adjust over travel, yet) and I had it down to a very nice 3lb pull in 3 minutes.

I hope to try it this weekend and will try to report back. If I like it, I will be on the search for the WMR version I wanted originally.

Oh, to those of you who own one, do you know what the wood really is?

Exactly which model do you have? They are made by Zastava but imported by many different companies under different names. Mine is a Remington Model 5, of which Remington imported barrelled actions and fitted them with American laminate walnut stocks, then screwed buyers out of a mag and jacked the price up. This backfired when they sit in a rack beside CZs, sales fell off and Remington discontinued the model and lowered the price. Fit and finish on mine is very good, blows Savage away by miles.

Picked up some Maximags with the 30gr TNT's, it will get tested out this weekend....

So what is this thing?
Is it inspired by CZ, or inspired by Norinco, or what?
Not sure about the inspiration, but I sincerely doubt that Zastava Arms would be inspired by Norc lol Well, maybe the QBZ-95 but you gotta give'em the thumbs up for that one. Zastava Arms has been around since 1853 and have been a legit arms producer with some pretty interesting models. Yes, they did produce some firearms under licence, like the M70 (slightly modified AK, very well received), M57 (TT variant) and PAP (SKS, but no chrome, beautiful stock, grenade launcher, much more accurate). They also had some of their own designs like the M21 (while it's an AK "variant", it's been redesigned and modernized, can stand shoulder to shoulder with Galil) and EZ9 (one of the top 9mm pistols out there).

I picked up 2 mp-22 rifles. After looking at all the ones in the store these were by far the nicest stock's. I wasnt sure what one I likes better so took them both. I will be taking them out saturday.
