Zeiss Conquest scope

As a percentage, the Leupold warranty claims are much higher due to the magnification ring issues alone.

Where do you get your comparison figures? Since we sell almost all optics we have a fairly accurate idea of what scopes have problems especially out of the box. We sell by volume more Leupolds and Bushnell scopes than any other makes and Bushnell bad out of the box is more than 30-1 compared to Leupold (yes I know Bushnell makes entry level scopes and that is where the majority of failures are). Since we have been in business we have sold a couple of thousand Leupold scopes and the bad out of the box returns can be counted on one hand. Recently (last year or so) we have had a number of Zeiss conquest rifle scopes with different problems but most relating to debris visible in the scope or problems with the reticles. We have returned these scopes and they have been repaired in about 1-2 months. All Leupold repairs have been done in less than 2 weeks back in our store. Bushnell warranty is about 3-4 months currently. Phil.

Do a search on other forums, like 24hr campfire, and you will see for yourself that overly tight magnification rings are a common problem with Leupold scopes. There are multiple threads dealing with this issue. Most posters that have owned several leupold variable scopes post that they have experienced this same situation. There are more reports of Leupolds with binding magnification rings than there are reports of any other scope failures.Sure Leupold fixes the problem under warranty, but why do they ship the defective scopes out in the first place? There would be many more claims, but some people simply adjust the scope to one magnification and leave it rather than going to the hassle of sending the scope out for warranty.Other people keep using the scope hoping that with use it will loosen up in time.I have owned two such Leupold scopes, and did the latter, but after realizing that the situation was not going to change,I sold the scopes and let the new owners deal with the issue. If every situation of an very stiff magnification ring resulted in a warranty claim, you would need more than your hands to count them.

On the other hand, although I have owned over a dozen Leupold scopes,I have never had one not hold zero,or fog up.All tracked reasonably well, but some certainly did not track as well as my Zeiss,Swarovski,Kahles or Nightforce scopes.
In fact none of my hunting scopes have ever failed in the field, and that includes Bushnell(about a dozen scopes),Zeiss(four scopes),Swarovski(six scopes),Kahles(two scopes),Leupold(about a dozen scopes),and Weaver(one scope).
So overall,I have had issues with only two of about three dozen scopes, and both of those scopes were Leupold scopes with magnification rings that were binding. Those are my comparison figure based on my own personal experience.

How come the Leupold CDS is only calibrated to 600 yards? Is that all the elevation adjustment there is?

How many Zeiss Conquest models with Rapid Z have had problems? If I shell out $1200 for a scope it better be reliable?

There is no guaranty of reliability just because you spend a lot of money.......

I'm sure there isn't a manfacturer out there that hasn't had reliability issues. I've got three Rapid Z scopes and I've had no issues.....I've got a half dozen Nikon scopes and I've had no issues and I've got a couple Leupolds and have had no issues. I have had issues with Burris and Swaro but I write that off to shat happens.

I'm sure the Zeiss is no better or no more prone to issues than any other quality scopes. The Rapid Z reticle is the simplest/most tunable ballistic reticle I've seen however.

So if I spend $5000 on a Zeiss Diavari I could expect it to fail like a Conquest model could?.......It is utterly amazing that manufacturers get away with in this day.

I guess anything man-made can fail....just look at the SpaceShuttle...

I will still probably end up with a Zeiss Conquest with Rapid Z....

When I was looking for a scope for my main hunting rifle, I searched a lot for posts comparing the VXIII to the Conquest. Most people who said they had both scopes said that the Conquest has better glass. The Leupolds have the advantage in warranty turnaround. Can't go wrong with either one.

LOL...anything can break....and does.

I own Zeiss Conquest scopes and a couple Leupold scopes. The Zeiss is better. Optics are both good, but the controls on the Conquest are better, no lash problem and it's a constant eye relief scope like the NF. The Leupold scope has a big difference in eye relief across the magnification range.

In terms of warranty etc. No problems so far. But... one of my Conquest scopes did have a spec inside the optics. I walked into the store they took it and handed me a new one. If I bought a brand new scope with a manufacturer defect and had to wait 1-2 Months I would never do business with that company again. Zeiss would also be hearing about it very quickly.

I really don't think Zeiss deserves a thumb down, every manufacturer has dud once in awhile. I have 4 not a problem, not saying they won't but thats what warranty is for.
