ZERO TO 100yrds

Going to install a synthetic stock and williams WGRS receiver sight with front fire sight on the Marlin 336. Should make for a light fast handling bush gun

There are a lot of rifles that are up to this task, I have three rifles available to me and I am trying to narrow it down to one, there's no point having three rifles to do the same job. Out of THESE three rifles which one would you choose? Marlin 336 30-30, Remington 742 carbine 30-06 or ruger 44 mag carbine (tube fed model)

I would blow all those off and get a 7mm-08 and zero to 500 yards! If that Ruger had been the rotary mag, I would have picked that one to stay! I see you are staying with the 30-30, that's A-ok, but blow the bulky Marlin out the door and get a pre '64 94 and forever be happy!

I would choose the .30-30...well, actually, I would choose to sell it and buy a .45-70 lever...but of the three you listed, and for that particular application, the .30-30 is the gun to use.

You made a good choice. If this was to be an only 1 gun idea than the 30-06 was the only way. Short range fast moving the 30-30 is a better choice. As for sights I like a large rear peep and glow front. a red dot or similar might work. I have not used them much. Good luck and let us know what you did. AJ

I've owned all 3, and currently have a 7600 rifle in 35 Whelen.

For a dedicated deer rifle where the bush is a little thick, I'd chose the 44 Mag Ruger Carbine every time.
Short, light and very fast, particularly with a receiver peep sight ( or 1-4x scope ), they are a joy to carry.

Where I've hunted, in 4 different camps (Almaguin Highlands, Parry Sound District, Muskoka & Kawarthas) it's rare to
ever get a shot at anything over 60 yards. Dogging & Still Hunting, the Ruger would be my first choice, the Remington pump second.
Nothing wrong with the Marlin, or the 30-30 for what you want, just my preferences. My first deer was killed with a 44-40 Winchester rifle, and the most recent with
a 257 Roberts. The longest shot has been something around 75 yards, the closest, maybe 3 or 4. The 30-06 in my opinion is really over-powered for this kind of hunting,
but the Remington carbine, a very handy rifle well-proven in the deer woods.
