Zero'ing your 22lr

Hey guys,

Curious, what ammo do you zero your 22lr rifle for and at what distance?

I tend to zero mine for CCI mini mags @ 50 yards, but don't shoot them as much as some cheaper ammo. So I'm wondering if I should just zero it for what I shoot the most.

Also does anyone keep track of how different rounds shoot in comparison to where they are zero'd so you can make adjustments on the fly to zero for the ammo your shooting?

buy a few different brands of ammo...leave the scope set where it is and shoot 5 shots of each brand at the same distance but separate targets. best grouping is usually the guns favourite ammo. be sure the gun is held in the same position for each trial. Then keep shooting til you are happy with the groupings.

Yea I'm familiar with how to test my groupings, question was more about what ammo people choose to set their zero's for, and at what distance.

I have a hard time sticking to one brand of 22lr ammo, I like to mix it up and try a little of everything.

Imma find a favorite ammo and zero for 50-75. I loooove to shoot 22lr at 100-150/200 at steel targets I hang up. My next task is to set that zero but write down dope at different distances. I wanna be able to use that crosshair but also know well where that duplex point(where the fat line meets the skinny line) is going. Ive been using that as a holdover to hit steel at 100 but I wanna know exactly where it is so I can use it as a mildot

If you search for a .22 trajectory chart you'll find the zero for HV ammo is the same at about 20 as it is at 60 yards.
Subsonic stuff at few yards closer, 17 and 52.
Every gun is different in what ammo it likes best. Try everything you can. Zero it at the close distance to start and fine tune at the farther.

I zero for 100m. Once I found the ammo my gun like best (Remington AccuTip .22WMR) I bought 5000 rounds from the same lot. Then, using a ballistics program I glued the come ups/downs (mil-dots) on the inside of my rear flip up scope cap. I can reliably shoot at anything from 50m out to 200m.

this, my rifle is zeroed at 100yds, I use mildots out to 200 yds as well.

I have a Savage BTV and it likes CCI ammo the best. I generally use standard velocity CCI and my rifle is zeroed for that at 50M. Sometimes I use CCI stinger ammo and it will shoot about an inch high at the same distance. With the standard velocity round nose I'm looking at under an inch at 50. The stingers which are about 600fps faster and hollow point are in and around an inch.

I won a Sightron 3-9 with BDC. The bottom is sighted for 100 yards but I have not tried the cross hair and first mark for exact yardages.
Using MiniMags in a Marlin 39M. It was a test in the first place so nothing ventured yet.

Scope should be zeroed for your specific ammo. As option, you can set zero for most accurate ammo you have, after that just compensate drops for other ammo. E.g. I know there are 2 ticks compensation between CCI MiniMag 40gr and 36gr at 100m, 5 ticks compensation between CCI Minimag 40g and CCI Stinger at 100m.

i always zero at 75 yards and use the same ammo as i use in the field. Nothing spectacular or expensive. It all depends on the ammo it likes and setting your scope to where that ammo hits the target. it seems that Winchester 555 ammo is the ammo most .22s i have like.

I zero for 35' with irons, puts you back on at 100 yards and covers most shooting in between.

I sighted my CZ452 Varmint at 50yds using SK Magazine. Same scope settings were used for CCI Standard Velocity and Winchester Dynapoint GT. This became my standard.
Scope elevation settings were varied for other types of ammunition around that standard. For instance, CCI Blazer required 6 clicks down, federal Premium Match HV required 8 clicks down, CCI MiniMag...12 clicks down, and etc.
I spent a day doing this and recorded my findings for future use as I like to shoot all sorts of ammo in a quest for accuracy...er, I mean fun.

IIRC, I zeroed my 597 with CCI green tag at 75m. It serves as a good middle ground for me, a couple of quick test shots with other ammo is plenty to get the drop/rise compensation figured out.

Most of my .22's are iron sighted. I put a target out at 30 yds or so, ( don't even bother to measure it, just move it out till it looks right), and use a target a bit smaller than a quarter. When I can keep most of my shots in the centre, using a 6-0'clock hold, I call it zeroed. My open sighted .22 mag is sighted at 50, and the scoped .22 mag is zeroed for 100.
