Zhukov Handguard Mod Gas Blowback

Hi All,
I have a question for those who did the Zhukov handguard mod on their VZs. So I took my rifle out for the first time today after doing the handguard mod. I made the cuts to the sides where the gas vents out, but I get gas that's blowing back into my face. Is that normal?
