I'm heading to Zimbabwe next spring for a 2-week hunt of a variety of game.

Does anyone here have any experience hunting down there?

I'm heading down with a South African that I work with here in Ontario, so I am not going in blind. I have also looked at all the firearms regulations for S.Africa and Zimbabwe.

I'm just wondering if there are any surprises that I can't find by googling regs and prices and such.

Thanks.

You should check out the Accurate Reloading forum. They have an outstanding subforum devoted to African hunting, loaded with guys who have been there and done that numerous times. I've hunted Africa (not Zimbabwe), and I found that forum more helpful than just about any other single source of information.

Take a look at their Hunting Reports - Africa section as well. Lots of entertaining reading...even a couple of reports by Yours Truly.;)

There are at least a few more African hunters on AR as well, and I think that Big Ugly Man hunted Zimbabwe...maybe some of the other guys as well. If he doesn't find this thread and chime in, you could PM him.

You are going to have the time of your life!

John

X2 what John said. Really helped prepare me for my trip to Namibia last year as there are many potential surprises that a simple Google search will not turn up.

I assume that you are planning on taking your own firearm. Have you checked out Canadian regulations as well as the African ones? Canadians are supposed to get an export permit to take guns out of the country but there is currently an embargo on taking a gun directly to Zim. which some guys have creatively figured their way around with planning.

I am bringing my own gun. I figure my .308 will knock down anything we're after there. I don't think I'm going to be shooting anything larger than a Kudu.

We're actually flying into S.Africa and driving across to Zimbabwe. My chum has a winery in the northern part of S.Africa, so we're going to head there first, then drive across the border.

This is the camp we're going to;

He's been there before and loves it.

The one thing I couldn't find was the pistol-carry laws for Zimbabwe. Anyone know anything about that?

I've done Zim a couple of times. The best thing about the country is comparatively affordable elephant and buffalo hunting, for plains game I'd go somewhere else. Hedge your bets by sticking with top notch operators, there's enough shakey and shadey going on without trying to save the last few bucks.

Take twice the money and half the clothes, camera cards and batteries always seem to be in short supply when you need them.
If you have the time Vic Falls is awesome.

(Haven't been there, but have friends who have experience.) Expect to find nothing imported in the shops. Bring all necessaries with you. Expect to pay cash for everything. Don't expect prices to look right - they have had some frightening hyperinflation. And, when you leave lighten up your luggage so you can help people who need your generousity.
