Hi : Just got a 458 win mag 602 and it has such a long action I am thinking convert to 458 lott. Anyone on here done that and how did it work? How is the accuracy with cast bullets? Thanks

The ZKK series never came with butterknife bolt handles.

Gunbug, there will be no problem with the conversion, though the front sight may need to be changed. Contact Daryl_S on NE about shooting cast, as he seems to have a lot (no pun intended) of experience with that.

Nice rifle btw.

Seems odd to me to go to the trouble of rechambering to Lott (yes, I know it's not really much trouble) then to shoot cast bullets out of it. I can tell you first hand how much fun it is scrubbing lead out of a hot 45 caliber rifle. And the Lott is a whole world hotter than my 45-70 with 400 grain bulets.

The whole point of the Lott is to coax more horsepower (2150 FPS IIRC) out of the 458 with grain bullets. Why then would you download it to shoot cast, even gaschecked, out of it? It sounds like you're trying to make use of the long action but to no real end. The Lott, and all African intended cartridges, are made for one thing: giving irritable, dangerous beasts a kick in the teeth. Why not keep to the intended use?

My $.02 would be to keep your 602 stock and buy a Marlin 1895 if you want to play with cast bullets. This way you get 2 guns (which is always better than one) and the Marlin will only cost you half as much, seeing as you will have saved on the gunsmithing charges.

Then again, you could rechamber to Lott, shoot cast bullets, get pissed because it leads so bad and sell it to me when you're all said and done. :D

Another major advantage in re-chambering to .458 Lott from .458 WM is that the long BRNO magnum action feeds the longer Lott cartridge more reliably than the shorter OAL WM. This is an important consideration in a dedicated dangerous game rifle.

The action length would lend itself well to that rechambering, however, I would be tempted to 'play' with it as a .458wm for a while. For the added velocity & power gain you will end up with, I'd be tempted to leave it as a
.458wm unless you find yourself in need of the additional power. Good luck with the gun, I know it well.;)

cast bullets

Hi All: I have used tempered wheelweights in lots of calibers with no leading. I only thought of the lott because of the long action and I have not located any .458 win mag bras in a week of trying except for 20 norma for $50.oo plus txs and shipping. Regards Dan

Do it ! The 458 Lott is COOL:cool:
The Lott will still Shoot the 458 Win Mags anyways if you want the Reduced Loads for Practise ;)

I miss my 458 Mag:(
FWIW.I shot quite abit of Hard Cast through my 458 at Max velocities..leading was Not an issue..especially given the Tolerable number of rounds you can stand to fire in one sitting anyways.
