.375 Ruger....

Hi Dogleg,

The question concerning the CheyTac was not velocity. It far exceeds any other 375 factory loading. RockChucker, here in Whitehorse has barrelled up and chambered a number of them, and we are familiar with the cartridge.

The statement was that the 350 gr spitzer's high BC could not be taken advantage of in shorter rounds.

Your 375 Wby is the most practical of the bunch. Nothing wrong with 270 spitzers at over 3000 fps. At least that's what mine does. BTW, forming cases out of 416 Remington Mag give perfect brass of the correct length. One pass through the 375 Wby sizing die, load, and go hunting. :)

Best,
Ted

Yeah, Rockchucker sold me most of the parts, dies, brass and lent a reamer as well.;)

I'm getting 2800 fps with the 300s in the .375 'Bee, but when I went to chronograph the 275 grain CEBs the wind blew it over and smashed the tripod all to #### so I'll have to wait til I calm down enough to buy another one and try again. The CEBs and 270 A-Frames both shoot very well, and for now I'll just assume that they are faster than the 300s. The A-frames have been a very good buffalo bullet for me and I want to see what another 250 fps or so brings to the party. This having a curious nature is somewhat of a curse.:D

I get the same, 2800 fps with 300s using 90 gr of Norma 204, and all the 4350 powders come pretty close to that as well.

The 300 gr spitzer boat tail actually shoots a bit flatter beyond 400 yards, however I never used it on game. Always used the 300 gr Partition.

Ted

Really? I thought this was the official 375 hijack train wreck thread!

BTW, your 270 Winchester with the 18" barrel is all packed up and ready to ship.

Sincerely,
Ted

Ya Ted cause that's what I've been wanting all my life..........is it at least a full stock? Oh well another donor action for something usable, like a 23 cal......LOL

Well, no co-operation from the weather............woke up ready for a full day at the range and guess what......RAINING. Guess I'll work on more lighting in the gun room and see what tomorrow brings.

I woke up to go bear hunting. snowing like a bastard.

Bored last night so I cast about my gear in the shop until I found my Wheeler driver set (a lot of my stuff is still boxed and stored in my shop until the gun room is complete) I then tore the Ruger down and low and behold it is already bedded and a good job too. So I changed up the scope to a VX1 3-9X40 I picked up the other day while cruising through Bass Pro, last one they had or I would have bought 3 @ $269 ea. Tough to beat a VX1 3-9 as a "knock around good for everything scope" and at that price it's a steal !!
Anyway as soon as the weather smartens up I'll make my way to the range and start the process of wringing her out.
60 rounds of full bore 375 test loads should make for an interesting day, I also have some full bore 9.3X300 loads to test and some 340 and 375 Wby loads to test. Glad I have red wine and Tylenol with codine for the evening after. I usually take 5-6 rifles so I don't have to wait for 1 rifle to cool all the time, 1 minute of shooting and 10 minutes cooling makes for a very boring day.

Went out and shot my Ruger .375 Alaskan earlier today. Small groups at 200 meters with both Hornady 300 grain and Barnes 250 grain TTSX's. Makes me smile!

What load did you end up with for the 250 gr TTSX? I got two boxes and need to come up with a load for this fall.

The "old 375 H&H" has done it all, it has nothing more to prove..................from duiker to elephant and everything in between !!!!

Exactly :) It's done it all! It is high time the .375 H&H be retired. Like many things old it has an unpleasant aroma, let it be put to pasture, laid to rest, faded to memory, entombed, brought to a close, revoked, nullified, en-sepulchered, inhumed, held the last rites, abolished, quashed, rescinded, retracted, expunged, dismantled and dismissed, withdrawn, disclaimed, disowned, disheveled, repudiated, recanted, counter-ordered, declared null and void, rubbed out, disavowed, re-bleued (dog forbid!), deprecated, slammed, disparaged, rejected and renounced, disesteemed, disfavored, neglected, frowned upon, pooh-pooh'd, rebuffed, blown off, derogated, bashed, enema'd, reviled, smeared (and perhaps paped), slapped, scolded, and finally made into fishing weights!

What a eulogy for the old girl, the passing of a cartridge always putting on airs and graces, and drinking tea with the little finger in the air. Goodbye old girl, you've had a decent run. Now let the new King Rule supreme over this Dominion, and over the Dark Continent...:p

Oh brother. Guys, the head stamp on the cartridge doesn't matter, the bore diameter, the bullet, and its velocity are what does. Would I buy a .375 H&H? Yup! Would I buy a .375 Ruger? Yup! Would I buy a .375 Ultra? I have a couple of times. Would I buy a .378 Bee? Yup! Would I buy a .375 Winchester? That one's less likely. Notice a pattern here?

Is a .375 Ruger better than a .375 H&H? No, its just more of the same, the critter can't tell em apart and I can't run the Ruger bolt any faster than I can a full length magnum Mauser. Is the .378 Weatherby the best of the bunch? Maybe it is, but you would have to define your parameters. It will do some things the others can't, but it does them at a price. If you "need" to drive a 380 gr Rhino at 2500, its the winner.
