I decided to mod my Mossberg 500 combo today... here are the results..... the 18.5 barrel with a Hogue oversize fore end & Hogue pistol grip and a 6 shot sidesadle... in order to fit the fore end I had to also buy a action tube and what a difference that made, its much tighter and it sounds much sweeter when racked!!!

I have to tell you that Hogue pistol grip feels like part of your hand when you hold it, very ergonomic

I've always wondered how easy is it to "thumb" the safety on/off with the pistol grip?

Very easy, you can do it with your finger either on the trigger or off... one thing cool that I've noticed is that I'm a lefty and when the pistol grip is added it feels comfortable either left or right and the thumb safety makes it truly ambidextrous

I should add there are many types of pistol grips and I am only speaking of the Hogue... which BTW is very nice

It looks good with the Hogue PG and forend.

They are very compact in pistol grip configuration with the 18.5" tube.

I find that I shoot mine high when I fire from the hip. I usually extend my folder if I want to be accurate.

I'm not sure what you mean by "action tube". Could you please explain it to me? My forearm is very twisty and rattly.

I have yet to shoot mine (maybe next weekend) it will be interesting to see how it shoots now. Action tube is what the fore end rests on, some cheaper models like the Maverick and the 500 combo come with fore ends that are not on tubes but have just plastic and thin rails.

Here's a link to illustrate what an action tube is

OK me and my wife went shooting yesterday up Sylvester road, took the shotgun & my SKS with us....

Here is the report on the shotgun... much to my surprise and counter to what I would have thought the shotgun actually is easier to handle with a pistol grip especially for my wife. The Houge grip actually does what it advertises and absorbs quite a bit of kick. We shot it from the hip and slightly raised (after cautioning my wife not to get it too close to her face). We both loved the way it felt & shot, the action with the fore end tube is much better and way tighter. I found I could pump and shoot much faster than with the cheap fore end.

Gotta say Houge makes some quality stuff

I just modded my 500 Road Blocker with the same kit. The stock pistol grip is hard like a rock, the Hogue Pistol grip/Forend kit is a great deal in my books. I didn't have a washer included for my pistol grip and the stock washer(s) don't fit, going to have to go to the hardware store (anyone know the size). Forend was a snap, no problems. Feels 100% better than the stock Mossberg furniture. Nice padding and beefier Hogue pistol grip, Forend with a more secure grip texture. Haven't shot it yet but it feels damned good.

Hogue grip puts you a little farther away from the selector due to the over-molding, but it's still a one handed operation. If someone has small hands, it might be an issue over the stock pistol grip.

Nice job.

I have to agree about the Hogue furniture. Shot #7.5 and 00Buck with my Road Blocker and felt recoil was reduced. The pistol grip padding and over-molding works. Great grip on the forend too, a well made product and a pretty inexpensive upgrade. That 500 is so much fun shooting from the hip. The muzzle brake works wonders as well.

I might look into this one as well, as you can never have too much Mossberg 500 furniture.
ShockWaveTechnologies Raptor Grip.
A quality product that makes your PGO SG comfortable to shoot and controls are easily accessible. Ordered direct from ShockWave for under $40 to my door.

I find the Bird's Head grip puts your wrist in the best position to tame high brass ammo. I could shoot dozens of rounds of 00Buck without even breaking a sweat.
PGO SG's are vey handy and fun to shoot!

Is that a JIC 500 you have there? Wait, it looks parkerized... 590A1 shorty?

The stock mossberg pgo are the WORST! They have scientifically designed to transfer all the force directly into your wrist. I had to listen to my panty waist cousin complain about his owwee wrist for a week camping thanks to those douchebags. Needless to say when I got home I acquired an old youth stock, and chopped it into a ghetto birdshead grip

Depends if you are a man or not

Granted, the stock pistol grip is bad, but the Hogue is night and day. I was shooting 00Buck with mine and it was comfortable and FUN!

Sorry…I missed this post.
Mine's a JIC2 kit. Which is finished in matte black vs blued.
If you look closely at the trigger guard you will notice a seam running along the bottom indicating its polymer. 590A1's have metal trigger guards so no seam.
