First post guys. I was at Canadian Tire in Leduc, AB today and picked up a 1930 hex bolt Tula for $155. I also picked up an archangel stock and a spare 10rd mag. I've been wanting to do a build with these archangel stocks for awhile. My question is just how rare are these hex bolts? Is it something i'll feel guilty about changing down the road? Am I better off to keep this one as is and buy another for my build?

Buy another to put in the AA stock. Like a 40's Izhevsk. The barrel bands on the 91/30s don't make it past the front sight hood and muzzle either for these builds.
Better yet, find a M38/44 to put the AA stock on. Those bands come right off due to the shorter muzzle. They also look better in the AA stock, since they don't have that really long, bare naked barrel extended out.

Thanks guys. I agree the shorter barrel looks better. I figured I would get it cut down and re crowned. From what I've read people have had the best results with a 20" barrel with an 11 degree crown.

The hex receivers on Mosin nagants are probably a little more desirable to build somthing from. they are of earlier manufacture (Russia switched to round receivers somewhere around the start of WW2, presumably to speed up manufacture) and are better quality than the later rifles (Especially compared to war production stuff)

Please don't bubba a hex rifle. I'll buy it off you for enough to go back to CT to pick up another one and buy a few boxes of ammo.

I think I'll keep this gun as is. Just looking around online and westrifles most expensive mosin is a 1930 tula hex for $400. Mine has all matching numbers minus the bayonet. Seems like a shame to hack the barrel off a gun that people seem to desire. Thanks for the help guys.

Sounds good, westrifles price there is a bit inflated, but nonetheless, a good decision. Its about a $250-$300 rifle.

@connexion, what did you use to do the bent bolt? I am not that keen on some examples I have seen and want to "truer" and longer look of the sniper bent bolt but most kits seem to have them fairly short. I have a round receiver '38 in an AA stock with bipod that shoots very well - want to scope it but only if I can get a good bent bolt.

Thank goodness that the hex did not get sawed off - bubba it fine but keep it original length etc and you can always give her back her original wood sheath. My '34 Tula hex is never getting messed with however...

Did they have many out in Leduc for $155 that were Hex? Could you pick the bin or was it luck of the draw? Only a 25 min drive for me and I want an Izzy!

I would buy another 91/30 round receiver. Izhevsk are pretty easy to still find. I would keep the hex for a collection. That's just me though.

There was only the one hex on display for $155. They did have a round receiver on display. And a sniper with scope for $579 I believe. It wouldn't hurt to call as they may have had more in the back. I was surprised at the selection of firearms they had. They even had a steyr 50 bmg.
