Hey all,

Just found a nice little gopher load that quite accurate (in my rifle anyways).
recipe:
Barnes Varmint grenades 36gr in .223
random brass
fed 205 small rifle primer
V N-135 @ 23.5 gr
OAL- 2.181~ ( i say about because I measured tip to base and there is always a tiny bit of difference in bullet tips)

It printed a nice sub moa group at 100 AND 300 yards. I shot a few gophers today and some of the shots of the day included a 120 yard shot that basically tore a massive hole from the tip of the nose to about mid back. looked like what happens to playdough when you push your hand through it.
and the next one was a 160yd shot where i had nothing but head to shoot at and I put it in the mouth and out the back. In short these bullets fair really well at all ranges i shot gophers at today. violent expansion even on smaller sized parts of the gopher.
my confirmed groups at 300 were with a steel plate painted.

Here's what kind of damage these bullets do.

not sure of velocity but with my 100yard zero i had to hold 1.2-1.3 mils hit at 300yds.

Hope some of you are able to use this, AND ALWAYS START LOW AND WORK UP!!!

Steve

i have the same round in 22-250..they are alot of fun..they are not kidding when they say grenades

They did fmj for me. I thought 3300fps would be enough to get em to expand but after shooting the same gopher more then once at close range and nothing happening I went back to vmax and that rips em apart nicely.

x2 A little bit of testing proved that my 53 gr V-max were expanding better than my 50 gr Varmint Grenades.

are you sure they where barnes..these rounds will expand hitting a grape..there is a vid of them on utube

Don't believe everything you see on the internet. At 3000 fps a 50 gr VG will penetrate a gallon milk jug full of water. A 53 gr V-max will not. I believe the Varmagedon is even more fragile, but I haven't tested them yet.

My experience was the same with the varmint grenade, through shots on crows while V-max will pop them. The long for weight bullet does shoot nicely in my 1:9 twist barrel and grouped sub moa for me as well. I've found the Sierra Blitz (not the blitzking) to be the most frangible projectile for my loading at 223 velocities and is also very accurate.

Yea .223 caliber and a 1:12 twist. I was getting great expansion at all ranges. Some of the really close shots didn't rip and tear like I'd hope but left a good sized hole nome the less.

I had been shooting the vmax but I was getting more or less pin holing at 100+ yds and anything inside that did get messed up pretty good.

I'll post some pics later lol

well i did a test on the varmint granades..i put a small orange on a sting with 1/4 inch plywood 4 inches behind it..i shot it at 100 yards..the round misted the orange and made a 5 inch hole in the ply..now if that is not huge expantion..the gun i used is a 22-250 with 5r riffling.with a 50 grain vg..now im not knocking hornady ammo..i use nothing but evalution in my 32 win, great rounds...but maybe its the extra energy a 22-250 provides over the 223 that im getting these resaults
