Any Plans for a .308 AR? MAJOR UPDATE MAY 8 2014

Not really a switch barrel, but it is as easy as a barrel swap on any AR platform. We are pondering offering additional uppers in other calibers.
Once we have the final version completed and into testing it will be available to fondle and check out at the shop.
We have not ruled out

AR style barrel swaps will be just dandy, as will uppers. I anxiously await more info and specs! I too will have to make a pilgrimage to have a fondle. :D

We HEAR you and folks won't be disappointed. The key is that it is NOT a battle rifle, so will be accurate, reliable and not have some of the useless features that were forced onto the AR platforms such as dust covers and forward assist mechanisms.

As far as hunting, if this rifle is geared as a potential hunting rifle, my opinion is that forward assist is nice for aiding in quietly dropping the action and assisting the extractor onto the cartridge. The very reason I would be interested in ATRS's rifle would be that I hope it would eliminate some noise and weight compared to my Norinco M14. Accuracy and reliability dependant too of course

I'm speculating more of an AR-180B type rifle in .308
side charging
no dust cover
gas system changed to DI from piston
can be made to take AR furniture
best of all NR

Very good point, I did not think of that one.

Wish you would keep the dust cover. Unless you're planning on an ADCOR style extra wiper/protector on the bolt. I know it's not a "battle" rifle but as a nonrestricted I would expect it to see it's fair share of dust and dirt off the range. Why not include a $3 part? I could see these being used by varminters, hunters and target shooters using trucks/ATV on dusty trails or climbing hills etc. Dirt/dust doesn't go well for a semi auto. Especially a precision semi auto!

Also wondering if the side charging handle can be used as a forward assist? As mentioned some when hunting like to quietly close the bolt and ensure the round is properly seated with the bolt locked.

Personally the forward assist has never been huge for me. There is the age old arguments for or against it. I have a few AR308 rifles without, including my Canadian DND AR10 rifles. However the current standard even for accuracy AR rifles has been lately to include the forward assist. Witha side charging version this may be possible just as a function of the handle as per other designs.

Of course eventually I would suspect there willbe a 50BMG upper?

Excited about the outcome. I look forwardto seeing the end product. Should be cool.

The dust cover serves a useful purpose. It helps keep debris out of the rifle.

If there is any possibility of this rifle being carried in the bush, perhaps you should re-look at some of your design criteria.

Also, if the charging handle doesn't reciprocate it's nice to have a forward assist. If someone wants to rack the action slowly and quietly they might need the forward assist or a reciprocating handle to close the bolt.

You do realize that a forward assist has nothing to do with quietly closing the action? It was a useless addition that the US Military had added to Stoners original design so that in the event of a damaged round being chambered, but not allowing the bolt to fully close the operator could then have a device to force the damaged/dirty or otherwise not properly fitting round into the chamber.
ALL semi autos will make noise when the bolt release is operated and the recoil spring slams the bolt into battery.
Holding the charge handle and allowing it to keep the bolt from slamming into battery would be the only way to quietly close the bolt. In a well made assembly there would still be no requirement for a forward assist assembly.
If ultra quiet is the requirement, then a bolt action would be the best option.
We will NOT build crap guns, so the chances of it being even remotely similar to anything norinco, or XCR ish are NIL!

I agree I'm not huge on a forward assist, i've never really seen the need for it. Any chance you have an idea of when your prototype will be back? I'm sure I can speak for all of us that the anticipation is killing us!

If your rifle is using ar mags would you consider allowing the design to take a 5 rnd mag flush into the stock? It would be unpleasant trying to walk in the field and bush with an ar pinned mag hanging out the bottom of the rifle.

This made me smile!

I don't have a problem with a rifle without a forward assist, but I do strongly prefer it having a reciprocating handle in that case. Would a reciprocating handle negate precision? If not why is almost everyone preferring a non reciprocating handle?

We will have both short mags that will be flush or very close to flush with the mag well as well as extended body length mags available.

Ever had your hand smacked by a charge handle that reciprocates? It HURTS! Hence the favoring of a Non reciprocation charge handle.
The move stuff with mass slamming back and forth during operation, the less likely of attaining repeatable accuracy.

All fair!

Will we have barrel options? Do you have weight estimate on this?

What we are looking at doing is offering about 3 different models.
Stage 1 Base model with something similar to A2 butt stock and round JP style for end. The options for barrels will be 18.5" light contour or 20" varmint contour.
Stage 2 Enhanced model with PRS style butt stock and round JP style for end. The options for barrels will be 18.5" light contour or 20" varmint contour.
Stage 3 Elite model PRS butt stock, carbon fiber PRI style for end and Proof research CFW barrel in 20"

Too early for weight, but we hope to be in the 7 to 8 lb area for the base model.

We still have a TON of work ahead of us to go from prototype to production.
