My #1 son, James just called to tell me he just arrowed his first grizzly. Took him last night about midnight one arrow, through and through, bunch of roaring and balling, quick roll around, 5 mtr dart and dead. Somewhere close to 7 foot, gorgeous hide, super claws, decent head, boar.
Will try to get some pics to follow later this afternoon.

I obviously worded it incorrectly PH, he has several grizzlies on his wall (5 or 6) but this is his first with a bow. He has been trying for this for a long time now but just couldn't get the right set-up to ensure a good kill.......until now!! He shot over one a few years back, then promptly dumped him with his rifle 5 minutes later when he reappeared at about 150 mtrs.
He's 31 now..........I think..........around there anyway. He's no kid anyway and has piles of hunting experience including 2 trips to Africa, this is just something he has been trying to do since he was 16 after he arrowed his first Dall sheep. We have both arrowed many, many blackies, but he has finally got his grizzly with his bow !!!
He shoots a Mathews Outback (I think) set at 70 lbs and carbon arrows with micro fletch and fixed broadhead. He is also a helluva shot and practises all the time, he took another Dall sheep last year at 91 yds, ranged and took another Dall a few years back at 84 yds ranged. He said this bear was about 35 yds, but didn't range it I don't think. His bow shoots point blank to about 40 yds so inside that he just holds and shoots.

Congrats to your son. Quite an accomplishment but then;) I understand he has quite an accomplished mentor:).

Appreciate the kind words Johnn, but I must say, he has far exceeded my ability and accomplishments with a bow, as well as the quantity and quality of animals taken with a bow. I can only take some credit, for the path he has taken as a hunter both with rifle and bow, but his accomplishments are all his own. He has worked hard and put in endless hours to become the excellent shot that he is, with both firearms and archery tackle.

With your experience with firearms and/or archery equipment, topped with your exploits in the field, I'd venture to say you've given him the foundation and ABC's that have brought him to where he is today. Well done I might add and congrats to you both:).

Good job! Congrats to your son, Doug...

In archery we work so hard to get to the place where something like this achievement is possible, the events surrounding the success are euphoric...

IME our job as parents is to cultivate a passion for the outdoors and shooting... it is up to our kids what they will do with that passion and where it will take them.

You obviously did your job...

Congrats to your son, he must be quite an accomplished hunter to take some of his game at those distances.

He is Mag, and he works very hard at his archery skills every year. And just as an aside, a few years back he had to have his entire shoulder reconstructed after the aftermath of a skiing accident. He has been able to work his strength back up to at least the skill level he had before the surgery and possibly even better. He is very committed............I wish I could get the same level of commitment towards his work................but that's a whole 'nother topic, ain't it.

It "ain't" easy working back. Had a major problem with a right rotator total tear and as handgun shooting is a big interest, it's taken a while, at 67, to get back to where I can put in at least a credible effort at the range. A lot of weight work in the den while say, watching the tube and the archery involvement helped considerably. Have a target bag hanging in the basement with a series of ranges marked out on the driveway and the odd bit of practice seems to have helped. Good on your son, and as I've mentioned, it ain't easy.

Grizz

Don't know at this point GA, looks like he'll go 21"..........what is P&Y mins for grizzly? We're not really "book" hunters, he has only ever entered his first ram, and I've never entered an animal in any book...........don't mind those that do, just not my thing. It is always a good reference point for the trophy quality, though.
