Bear defense gun?

Black bears are almost always nothing to worry about...it's grizzlies that you have to be alert to when you're in grizz country.

grizzly are stronger and dominant but black bear are making a mess in a camp and if both occurs in a space ill be more worried by the black than the grizz but that is just me.

i slept well in a tent in grizz and black country for years. wont say the same for our friendly visitors from outside in the summer lol ....

Most black bear attacks on humans happen from a predatory standpoint. That means they want to eat you. Those that charge when you surprise them (sow and cubs, etc.) will generally bluff charge only, if given enough space. With grizzly, most attacks are from a defensive standpoint. You surprise them and invade their comfort zone. That's the reason it's generally never a good idea to "play dead" with a black bear. The good thing is that by nature, black bears aren't nearly as aggressive as grizzly.

As for polar bear, my understanding is that they want to eat you and defend themselves, so you're screwed either way.

Gary Shelton, a respected outdoor author regarding this subject has this interesting advice;

All bears are unpredictable however; maybe one in thirty black bears could be a real threat to human life. Obviously with grizzlies and polar bears the threat level is considerably higher.

To think a 150lb black bear couldn't be a threat is borderline stupid. Even a small black bear who feels that you're his next meal could ruin your day.

"Teenager" bears can be a real nuisance. Old ones are also dangerous. I was bluff charged by a sow with cubs when I was 16. It was an "oh ####" moment for me

Your opportunities to have a bear problem increase exponentially with the amount of time you're in their habitat. You can run across the street and not hit hit by a car, but how do your chances hold up if you spend an entire day on the yellow line? Even if you're out in the back country, if there's no bear around, you won't have a problem. But if you're sharing a stretch of real estate with some black, brown, or white guys, the odds have shifted, and the chances of stumbling onto a grouchy one are not so remote.

I have a theory that rather than there being "good" or "bad" bears, any bear can be a dangerous bear given the right circumstances. There's exceptions of course, a cabin raider has become a cabin raider because he was rewarded the first time, and he remembers that. If you happen to own and occupy the cabin when he comes by, you guys are on a collision course. I don't blame a bear for being a bear, but if its him or me, he looses.

Unfortunately, black bears are spread fairly evenly over North America and far outnumber grizzly and polar bears, not to mention that polar bear and grizzly generally live in regions where the human population is low. Hence the reason far more people are killed by black bear than others.

Another one already. SEARCH function for the hundreds of threads like this already.

You know, I hear this a lot - and maybe I am doing something wrong, but does anyone else find that the search function on this forum does not work all that well?

For instance, out of curiosity, I searched "bear defense", and for good measure "bear defence", and I got this thread, and one other about motorcycles and bears (maybe it was bears on motorcycles?).

Is there a setting I am missing? I have only used the search function here a few times, and it generally doesn't really yield that much...even not finding threads that I KNOW exist!

Anyway, there is another way to limit the times you have to read a repetitive thread...it's called not clicking on it...

At any rate, aren't most of these Rossi Ranch Hand threads REALLY about the OP wanting to justify a Rossi Ranch Hand anyway??
I've never tried one, but if it's anything like firing a 3" slug from a Lupara, I'm not in. Like the guy said, put a stock on it, but then, what's the point?

Also, here in regulated Nova Scotia, a second firearm cannot be "at the ready", you can carry a shotty whilst deer hunting, for instance, or another rifle, but it must be unloaded and in a case/pack, not slung over the back etc.

Of course mostly the only bears here are in the dump, or the circus.

;-)

X10000 the search jigger is a piece of cow splat

buy A sling for your 870. I am a big fan of having a shotgun on your back. a bolt action or lever may be nice at 100 yards but at 6 feet you can swing that sling around pretty damn quick.

A girl that I went to high school with would disagree with you...had she not been killed while jogging by a black bear.

Sorry to hear about your lady friend...however I did say "almost always"...every black bear I've encountered has taken off, but they do make a mess of camp if it's unattended, especially if there's food around. The sows are protective of their cubs though...
