The M1 Garand Build Thread

Next to the Danish select m1 rifles, building is the way to go. Except parts are hard to find in. Most of the wait list for parts
have been canceled by American supplier's.

Mine ended up at 1692$tax/custums/shipping included with a boyds stock. With some tool kept and other resold + some parts re-sell in there too.

Just did a trip yesterday to the range. (don't have much time)
Shoot over 50rnds in it. Not a single failure.

168gr CoreLokt + Normal Gas Plug seems to work wonder.

Now an M1D build...
 
My first attempt at reparkerizing one of my Breda receivers. It was the scruffiest of the lot and after it was given a quick sandblast(just enough to take the remaining colour off) I simmered it in a pot of Brownells magnesium phosphate solution. Ten minutes till done, rinsed in cold water and soaked in some 10W30 to finish. I am pleased.
 
Anyone build an m1D rifle Yet? I have thought about it. Have 12 of them complete. I have some original scopes somewhere.
 
The nice thing about the stampings on both the Breda and Beretta receivers is that they are quite deep in relation to those on the US produced receivers so there is little chance of them being eroded by sand blasting. I had a very troublesome Breda receiver that I re-parkerized about 10 yrs ago. It had a couple of spots which simply wouldn't accept the parkerizing properly, even after proper de-greasing/de-oiling and two blasting and Parkerizing attempts. I concluded that it must have been due to some deeply imbedded oils, so I boiled the receiver in a lye solution before blasting and Parkerizing for a 3rd time. That worked.
 
Hi Everyone,

Just getting into the idea of building a 7.62 NATO Garand for shooting. So far, just reading this thread as much as I can and ordered the Berretta receiver.

I know part are getting hard to come by and thinking of making this a Berretta/SA mix. Seems the simplest way to go at this time. But, I also noticed how closely the M1 resembles the BM59. I also found a BM59 Parts Set on Sarco. Could this be a way of getting the majority of the parts affordably? Can this still be a shooter? Am I totally out to lunch on this idea?

Just thought I would get your opinions on this.

Rats! Forgot about that part. I guess I'll have to look at another way. But, I guess to my original question: Are the BM59 parts compatible? Like the oprod, bolt, etc? How much of an adjustment will I have to make for the magazine well? Or is this going to be one PITA?

If you are going for a BM-59 mag fed conversion it is a PITA. Just find a .308 barrel and go from there. Add the spacer block to avoid stuffing in a clip of 30.06 and you can build a nice shooter on the Italian receivers.

This one was just done today. The sandblasting took it to a dull grey raw metal. Washed and into the pot and bingo! Another successful refinish.
 
The BM59 oprod is completely different it is shorter and completely strait, almost looks like an M14 oprod. The trigger assembly should fit and work with the garand. I am not sure if you have to modify anything on the stock to make the mags work.
I think it is definitely a doable and fun project, I mean keep the garand as is just make the trigger assembly fit and work.
 
I have two bm59 op rods and 2 bm59 Barrels. It would be easier to make a m1 Garand carbine than a clip load bm59. The carbine
can have 8 rounds vs 5 rod magazine. Beretta made some.
