First Powder coats!

got some more bullets coated using f55's method and had awesome results. tsp of powder for 50 bullets (9mm and 45) tumbling them cold instead of hot like i was before. both of them have 1 coat of paint, but the yellow might need a second to cover up the blemishes.

ordered some more colours, came out pretty good!

EDIT: so far with any of the powder coated bullets i haven't noticed any leading accept for 1 batch that had very poor coverage. accuracy has been on par with normal cast and plated.

Those look great.

Which colors did you order.

thought i posted that, my mistake.

tool blue, kawasaki green, silverado silver and black matte tuscan (haven't tried it yet).

on the blue and silver i put the powder and bullets into a medium sized ziploc bag and shook and swirled it in a cool whip container. with the silver though i couldn't tell if it coated or it was just the cast bullet lol. the kawasaki green was in the coolwhip container only. i think i will be using the bag in the bucket method from now on. need to test it out in larger batches though (200-300 for 9mm).

Sorry ......... kinda new to the cast game but what exactly is the point of this powder coating asides from cosmetics? Does it act as a lube?

as yomomma (lol) pointed out it's a replacement for traditional lubing techniques. i still use traditional lube (ben's red lube that i made alot of) but at the moment i've only been using powder coat for 9mm, 45acp, 357mag, and 500 mag. it's a fairly new technique that has caught on alot because it's easy to do and has a very low start up cost. used toaster oven (got mine for $15) some powder and a couple of #5 recyclable containers for static build up.

i've pushed some 105gr bullets in my 357 mag with 22gr of h110 to about 1800fps give or take and had no leading.

Would this allow softer lead or a greater variation of lead hardness without leading? Does it shoot cleaner compared to say Alox?

Would you happen to have a video or a link to more information?

On 300blktalkdotcom they have a cast section, some people have tried various hardness of lead with good results.

This is barrel using powder coat 45 acp.

This is with lead bullet & alox.

Its much cleaner using powder coat, you will have no smoke as with alox and regular cast.

This is howto.

Plenty of videos on youtube, just search for powder coat bullets.

there is a section for just "alternative" coatings in on cast boolits here, Link.

basically though you just get a #5 container for the best static build up to better coat the bullets as you swirl and shake them up for a few minutes. you can buy some crossman black airsoft BB's and mix them in with your bullets and powder and they seem to generate more static and thus a much better coating. the other method that i just started to adopt is using a plastic bag (i'm starting off with ziploc bags) with the powder and bullets in them and the bag in the #5 container. the friction will cause static build up like the airsoft BB's without having to pick bullets out of the bb's.

once the bullets are coated i like to dump them onto a pan or tray and use a latex gloved hand to pick the bullets up and line them on a tray for the toaster oven. i will rub some of the powder between my fingers before touching the powder to reduce the powder rubbing off the bullets. i fit as many as i can on a tray and bake according to the powders recommendations, usually 10 minutes @ 400f or 15 minutes @ 375f.

use a mask while coating the bullets as the powder is very fine and not good for your lungs, also bake them outside as the coating will give off gas as it bakes. to check if you've baked them properly you can do 2 test; 1. smash a bullet with a hammer, the coating should stay on the bullet. 2. use paint thinner and try to clean the powder coat off of the bullet, it shouldn't come off.

Spawn,
I just did up my first PC bullets. I used Traffic Red and Signal Blue. The Red ones turned out quite well with only one coat. The blue ones weren't as successful and required a second coat. I'm still not overly happy with the result. I shot off 60 rounds tonight and they seemed to do the job. I don't have any signs of leading.

Awesome, did you get the powder from powder365.com? I will have to order that red, the one I got doesn't stick to well. Tool blue worked awesome though.

Some zombie rounds,

Yes, from powder365.ca. I didn't see the tool blue so I ordered the Signal Blue instead. They are both from the RAL line of powders.

AD, the red turned out great, I would be very happy with those, in fact i just ordered traffic red :)

We Should have a sticky with all the colors that work well.

Also humidity plays a big factor in how well the powder sticks.
