Ontario moose results are out!

After moving west I can tell you the draw system in Ontario is definitely a cash grab........in SK you pay $4 to enter the draw, if you are successful you buy the license, same in AB and it's $3, not buy the license, see if you are drawn and if not you are out ?$$ . AB resident moose this year is $33. What is it back home now? $60? And your HAL(SK) card and WIN(AB) number (equivalent to an Ontario outdoors card) are $6 and good for life, not renewed every three years!! What a rip off!!

Now back to the OP's thread........sorry for the rant. Good luck in the upcoming season, glad to hear you received a tag, especially for a hard to get area like WMU49!!

I'm from Quebec, how does hunting moose in Ontario work? Is it a draw ? Do you get an exclusive area to hint in at least?

In QC we just go out and buy a permit for moose in a certain zone and that's that. There are however draws for cows.

thx

You must buy a moose license, apply for either a bull or cow tag for the area you want to hunt, if successful you get a tag for the ### and area you applied for. If not you get a calf license good anywhere in the province that has a calf season. Some areas you must apply for calf as well. It is a stupid mess of a system. You have a much better system in QC. I lived 40 minutes from Temiscaming and knew many guys who gave up hunting in Ontario and started hunting in QC instead.

Interesting, and is there any exclusivity on the area you hunt in? I'm a new hunter, and here in QC there are a lot of people that wrongly "appropriate" hunting territories even though all public hunting zones are available for anyone. There are unofficial rules which say not to disturb other hunters that are hunting in hideouts, but we are still allowed to hunt the same areas. It seems however that many "older" hunters (have been doing this for many many years) are not at all open to sharing the hunting areas with other hunters and often times become aggressive. I want to start hunting, but it seems I will have a hard time finding a spot here in QC.

Haven't got it in the mail yet but checked online and got a cow tag applying by myself in 15B. One other person I work with got a cow tag in 15B by himself, and another got a bull tag in 13 by himself. Seems a bit odd based on the minimum group sizes for these WMU's now, I guess we all should have bought 649 tickets instead...

Calf only again this year. For those of you disatisfied with the draw system, perhaps it's time to start a letter writing campaign to the minister responsible demanding substantive change for next year. It's no use preaching to the choir on here.

No exclusive rights if you're on crown land. You try to be polite and avoid stepping on other people's toes, but there's not much you can do if someone decides to be ignorant about it.

I f@#$%g hate Ontario for this, and many many other reasons. Each year for the last 5 years i have threatened to move out west and leave this place forever. BUT...i discovered an Island fit for a king. And now i wouldn't leave unless they blew it up - Manitoulin Island. :)

Calf tag for me this year. :(
