Ontario moose results are out!

After moving west I can tell you the draw system in Ontario is definitely a cash grab........in SK you pay $4 to enter the draw, if you are successful you buy the license, same in AB and it's $3, not buy the license, see if you are drawn and if not you are out ?$$ . AB resident moose this year is $33. What is it back home now? $60? And your HAL(SK) card and WIN(AB) number (equivalent to an Ontario outdoors card) are $6 and good for life, not renewed every three years!! What a rip off!!

Now back to the OP's thread........sorry for the rant. Good luck in the upcoming season, glad to hear you received a tag, especially for a hard to get area like WMU49!!

Somebody has to pay for the McGuinty/Winn government reckless spending!! Are you expecting the liberals to come good for it? ;) :p

Interesting, and is there any exclusivity on the area you hunt in? I'm a new hunter, and here in QC there are a lot of people that wrongly "appropriate" hunting territories even though all public hunting zones are available for anyone. There are unofficial rules which say not to disturb other hunters that are hunting in hideouts, but we are still allowed to hunt the same areas. It seems however that many "older" hunters (have been doing this for many many years) are not at all open to sharing the hunting areas with other hunters and often times become aggressive. I want to start hunting, but it seems I will have a hard time finding a spot here in QC.

No unlike QC you do not get exclusive use of an area within a Zec zone. It is wide open to anybody at least on crown land, private property of course is different.

My hunting partner drew a bull tag and I drew a cow tag both for 18A. We applied as singles in the draw, next year will suck for sure as both of us will be pool 2 in the draw.

That's why you should always apply as a group.

Actually, ZECs are also supposedly public and hunters are not allowed to appropriate an exclusive area. The only place that I know of where you have exclusivity is on wildlife reserves.

Maybe I had that confused then? I know I had an acquaintance back home who hunted around the Temiscaming area and there was an area there where hunters were assigned a zone within the zone. I thought it was a Zec? But you saying wildlife reserve sounds familiar. Wish I could remember the name of the reserve. I do have a friend that does fishing guiding at Lac Beauchesne Reserve near Temiscaming. I don't know if hunting is permitted there or not? The fishing is awesome though!

Agreed 100%!! It would be nice to be able to just put in for the draw. I think it was $54 bones this year

You must buy a moose license, apply for either a bull or cow tag for the area you want to hunt, if successful you get a tag for the ### and area you applied for. If not you get a calf license good anywhere in the province that has a calf season. Some areas you must apply for calf as well. It is a stupid mess of a system. You have a much better system in QC. I lived 40 minutes from Temiscaming and knew many guys who gave up hunting in Ontario and started hunting in QC instead.

I gave up on buying a moose licence after 20+ years of buying a licence, entering the lottery and never getting a tag. The lottery system we have in Ontario blows hard.

I think I got one of the holy grail moose tags of ontario.....or close to it. 5th year applying.

Bull tag for WMU 60.

It is sad to say but guys my age and older (51) when applying as a single hunter in most WMU's in Ontario for moose will NEVER get a tag before we die. Some thanks for all the taxes and licences we have shelled for in this province. Of course group odds would be better but I prefer to hunt alone. This system is broke and we need to fix it.

I haven't experienced that, however I live in Northern Ontario, maybe that has some bearing, but every year I apply individually I get a tag.

It still amazes me how uneducated most hunters are about a draw system that has been in effect for decades... people do not understand the basics let alone how to maximize their chances of a successful allocation. Yes, the system is poor, unfair and imbalanced... it should be a "preference point" system... so that the next in line is assured of success... BUT, until that changes... read the stats, project the pressure based on the previous applications and current tags available and then apply "smart." With some thought and a willingness to move to a different hunting locale, you can considerably up the odds of drawing a tag.

...and yet, many of us are still/were still unsuccessful over a period of many, many years.
